One man gathers what another man spills

« on: October 10, 2010, 01:13:53 PM »

Listening to various Trevor Lucas and Fotheringay things and wondered what happened to his occasional song writing partner Peter Roche? I know a lot of people weren't overly keen on TL, but I always liked his folk/country thing that he added to FC. A big plus also, was that it enabled JD to show off his exceptional country licks.  Can't find anything on t'internet.  Sorry if this was posted at some other time.

That's got me curious as well, Trevor's co-writer is sometimes known as Pete Roach, I assume Pete Roche and Pete Roach are the same person (certainly credited on the same songs). A quick search on both names using the usual sources has drawn a blank so far...will let you know if anything comes up.

Thanks Dan. I tried the usual places Wikipedia and google of course. Just a thought, perhaps it was the wonderful Sandy, writing under an assumed name?!  Now that would be a great story wouldn't it?  Fez

May well be an assumed name for someone. 'Roach' has a pot connotation, to the unaware Wink Shocked

Sometimes helps to be over 60....there is a real Pete Roche and he's a poet (think he's still with us - born 1942).

He's part of that generation which includes Brian Patten, Adrian Henri, Roger McGough. I just found my disintegrating copy of The New Love Poetry which he edited and introduced.

Got to think about going up to see Sreve Ashley at Farnsfield so no time to Google him!

Feasibly, it could be one and the same Ed.   The age would be about right wouldn't it? Did he write under the name Roach too, do you know?

I'm almost certain that it's the same Pete Roche who wrote the poems and co-wrote with Trev. But I don't know how I know! I can't have got it from Trev, we were both pissed the only time I met him.

The "Roach" variant could be attributable in more than one way to the former smoking habits of certain members of FC..... Roll Eyes

Just got an email from Jerry, but he's not sure either!  He's got in touch with Elizabeth Hurtt-Lucas (which I could have done if I'd thought of it!) but she hasn't replied yet.

Jerry says:
" I can't help you myself, I'm afraid as I don't believe I ever met Peter
personally.

I hope you might have learnt more from another source. Please let me know if you have as
I would like to get in touch with him re some of the works he did with Trev."

Curiouser and curiouser. I can't believe that Jerry hadn't met him, seems a real mystery.....

It's not really that mysterious. Very often musicians won't meet the songwriters that create the songs they play.
Songs are often created in solitude or perhaps with a co-writer, especially as it looks as though Mr Roche was a poet rather than a musician. There is no necessity for he and Jerry to have crossed paths.

So no mystery, just how it happens.. Smiley
