Good grief, they were singing about the university town of Bangor in North Wales!  Shocked  That's new to me.

I thought the song was about the very beautiful and idyllic Bangor in County Down

There isn't even a seafront! Bangor is on the menai straits. Apparently the song was written about Rhyl but that wouldn't scan so nicely as Bangor Tongue

Didn't we have a lovely time the day we journeyed to Rhyl
A miserable day, we saw sheep on the way but the sun centre was brill
On the way back it reeked in the car, all the way from Prestatyn
Serves me right for not cleaning the seats after in it my labradour'd shat in
