Thinking of such songs, the friend I went to The Lowry gig with wanted to hear Hot For The Smarts and asked if I had a copy of it which I don't. Does anyone know if it's been recorded and is it available anywhere?

The Beesweb Song-o-matic page for the song does not list any recordings it appears on, only that it appears somewhere. The page with info on miscellaneous recordings lists some details but doesn't say which tracks appear where. The only recording on the net that I know of is this Youtube video. |

Actually I very nearly picked three of your five - I love Calvary Cross with its guitar workouts, and Painted Ladies is one of my favourite tracks from my favourite RT album. And I love Bad News so much that I once attempted to sing it a capella at a folk club. Boy, that's a dark song. Powerful though. Jules |

Think I'll have a bash at this.
1. 'When I Get To The Border'
The full band version with the mandolin/guitar trade-off licks in the end section. I've seen it played acoustically which was still great, but it's my list and I'm not going to be fobbed off with anything less than the real thing.
2. 'The Angels Took My Racehorse Away'
One of my top three RT songs and I finally got to see it played in Bristol last weekend. Would I like to see it again already? Yes. Yes I would.
3. 'The Calvary Cross'
When was the last time this was played? Anyone? I've certainly not been aware of it on any tour (from either personal experience or bootlegs/reviews) since I started attending shows, which was around 1993. It goes without saying that this will include a massive wig-out.
4. 'A Poisoned Heart and a Twisted Memory'
Sadly I'm too young to have seen the big band tours of the early-mid eighties, and Hand Of Kindness is one of my absolute favourite albums. This song ticks two boxes: it swings like a mother and also has a grin-inducingly tricky time signature. Mattacks/Nicol/Kirkpatrick et al will all be present and correct for this one, and they might even stay for the encore of 'Back Street Slide', although that obviously won't be included in the agreed five because it'll be purely their decision. Additionally, Simon Nicol will be wearing terrible clothing, probably a tartan jacket, and playing a guitar that looks like a Cornflakes box.
5. 'Never Again'
There has to be at least one acoustic number and tonight it's this one. The previous selections aren't quite as depressing as they could be, and this one should bring the mood down nicely. I've also never seen him play it.
