My copy arrived yesterday. I've only just started listening to it but two observations so far.
I'm slightly shocked that some of the stuff on the first disc sounds more as though it was recorded in 1933 than 1973!
Secondly, it is a shame that nobody thought to include musician credits for the ensemble recordings.

Keep posting the observations, Gub. I still have 2 weeks before I can lay hands on my copy (and probably a while longer before I can actually listen to it properly).
Sorry to hear the sound quality isn't so hot on some of the tracks - let's hope it improves as it goes on.

Indeed. The first Top Gear session sounds distinctly "off air", but an immense improvement on my old cassette copy. Also, a significant amount of the Hammersmith broadcast is missing, nothing at all from the '75 "In Concert" & a Barrymore's video is seriously truncated. There will always be something to quibble about, but lack of musician credits is a poor show. In all though, it's still a fine artefact. |

It seems just to be the first few tracks from an acoustic John Peel session from 1973. Dramatic improvement after that. |

RT & TT is already scheduled to happen....they're both booked for Wickham Festival
It has happened before on the Celtschmerz tour before Teddy's first album came out. I remember a number of duets at the Crawley gig. They performed as a duo at Glastonbury last year as well, doing plenty of RT material. |

Have waded my way through all of the audio discs now. A valuable addition to the RT collection but there is probably nothing here to supplant versions available elsewhere. It is probably best to listen to to it session by session otherwise the track selection gets a bit repetetive in places.
The undoubted highlight for me is the acoustic session for Andy Kershaw in 1985 including a rivetting Ghosts In The Wind.
I really hope some of the Capitol years sessions, including the 100 Club performance shared with Crowded House which, if I recall correctly included a performance of Persuasion with its co-writer.

Jules I wasn't necessarily referring to the studio versions as being preferable. My favourite recording of Ghosts In The Wind for example (and one of my favourite RT performances of all time) is from the Live At Crawley disc with Danny Thompson (itself a BBC recording). |

I got my copy and can't recommend it enough. Wonderful stuff.
If it hasn't already been mentioned, a substantial portion of the DVD comes from the same performance that was previously released as "Across a Crowded Room" on VHS and laserdisc. I believe this marks the first DVD appearance of this material. The balance comes from OGWT (hello, Jet Plane in a Rocking Chair), a few other UK TV shows, and the complete "A Little Night Music" in pristine video and sound quality.

Three tracks were included on the 'Live in Providence' DVD, two of which are duplicated on the BBC box. So in total that's eight of the eighteen tracks from the video that have made it to DVD so far, spread over two separate releases. The tracks on the box are from the short-lived 'Late Night in Concert', a typically half-hearted effort by the Beeb really as most of the programmes were just cut down versions of commercially available videos. |

Aside from that, much of the performances are excellent, especially the live 1982 and 1986 sets. I also enjoyed the solo acoustic versions of SOTL, Gethsemane and the more recent Warrior and FPB stuff. Yet to watch the DVD. I await the next few volumes of the Capitol era, other live shows (I am sure the in concert programme was an hour or so long)..

I really didn't think it was that bad. For the 1973 vintage session, it was about what I was expecting, maybe better. Jules I suppose we are used to a more pristine sound: the 1973 session sounds almost as if it is a recording of the recording, whereas the live material sounds really fresh and well recorded. It is only the 73 session which sounds muddy in case anyone gets the impression that the malaise extends into the 80's and beyond material.. |
