I'd like to know if any early musical experiences stand out as having been influential to you.

Are there particular 'Eureka' moments (as I had when a friend first lent me Led Zeppelin IV, thus showing me there was more in the world than my parents' good taste and the pop charts)?

I think it would be seeing Bowie and Mick Ronson on Top of the Pops doing Starman. That really made me excited and curious about what music could do and the colourful characters involved.

Whe I was very young I was pretty obssessed with The Monkees. They seemed to be four mates wearing matching shirts, sharing a flat and going places in a big flashy car to play music for people who thought you were great. INCLUDING GIRLS! Well, what was there not to like about doing that?

The Monkees were great weren't they. In fact the music still is.

At the risk of embarrassing Mark, his fine new book "Reelin' in the years" discusses formative musical influences (Amongst other things) :-)
