When did it first appear?

The first album it appeared on was Nine. Don't know if it was used before that.

I've done a trawl and come up with this very small snippet of information:
Original-named version available by Graham Meade of Typotheticals. Artist shared the demo with Annexcafe Fonts group.

Came across this 1906 book called "Fairport From The Footlights" a few years ago. I'll try & dig it out for more info. It's a collection of recollections regarding a Scottish Theatre, in Arbroath, I believe.

Comment from Amazon re this book " bought this as there was no information from Amazon on it, and assumed it was about the 40 years of Fairport Convention being celebrated last year. It isn't. I am left with a really dull book I have asolutely no interest in what so ever. Cheers Amazon. If you could put some information on all products, not just the ones that sell by the bucket-load, that would be appreciated."  |

The other side of the coin here is, did anyone else notice that the Fairport font appears nowhere on the Festival Bell album, either in the notes or on the cover? Now that may be the first for a very long time. Gladys' Leap did not have it on the cover, but I'm fairly certain it made an appearance in the notes at least.

i read somewhere that it was designed by a bloke called Stephen Hammett but that's all I remember. |

Had always assumed that the Fairport Font originated in the church beneath the Festival Bell..........

Before the advent of bleddy Microsoft and other colonials, it was FOUNT, as in Type Fount and "fount of all knowledge". Ask a hot metal printer.
As Steve says, a font is wot you baptise babies in.

the memory may be playing tricks here,and in the absence of being able to find photographic proof, but wasn't the plaque on the Fairport house in north london written in the Koster Xmas special font , which has become widely known as the Fairport font?

Ey Oop, Jim - I think I recall Simon Nicol commenting on this once and saying that the Fairport Font name plate was a later addition after the FF appeared on Nine, rather than the other way round.
