I'm part of a Yahoo group of folks who have been on Nancy Covey's Festival Tours, and this was just posted -- thought you all might be interested, so here's a copy, including notes from the original poster. Wish I was there....

Richard Thompson (acoustic; solo except where noted)
Saturday, December 3, 2011
Montalvo Arts Center, Saratoga, California
All Request Show, Night 2 of 3

I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight
Take Care The Road You Choose
Some Enchanted Evening (request was for something from South Pacific)
Beeswing
Hokey Pokey
Persuasion
Shenandoah
I'll Keep It With Mine (Fairport Convention)
a generic hornpipe instrumental (name unknown, or made up on the spot?)
brief excerpt of something from Gilbert & Sullivan, a duet with a woman in the audience
a made up song RT improvised based on a request for Son House's "Death Letter"
(with the words death, letter, son, house)
It Won't Be Long (The Beatles)
The Weight (The Band)
A Brother Slips Away
For Shame Of Doing Wrong
Teddy Bear Picnic (request was related to Teddy Thompson, maybe asking
for a lullaby that young Teddy used to like at bed time when he was a child???)
1952 Vincent Black Lightning
Love Whispers Your Name
Mystery Train (Elvis Presley song) (with George Galt: harmonica)
Mingulay Boat Song (with George Galt: harmonica)
Galway To Graceland (with George Galt: harmonica)

ENCORE:
She Twists The Knife Again
Oops! I Did It Again (Britney Spears song)

The Ghost Of You Walks
Poor Ditching Boy
Dad's Gonna Kill Me
Beeswing
1952 Vincent Black Lightning
Mingulay Boat Song (with George Galt: harmonica)
Cooksferry Queen (with George Galt: harmonica)
Bathsheba Smiles

ENCORE:
Little Sally Rackett (with audience refrain "haul her away") (I think this was in response to a request for "__(something I can't remember)___ or your favorite sea shanty")
The Great Valerio
I'm A Believer (The Monkees, written by Neil Diamond) (RT decided to do this after an audience exchange where some audience members were hissing about the selection of Persuasion, and RT said one of the hissers was just upset that his request for a Neil Diamond song was not
selected, then RT said that I'm A Believer was a good song, someone in audience said "Do It!" and he did...)

The Hots For The Smarts was requested by my friends Jon Callas and Tamzen Cannoy.

They were there for several nights!

I really wish he'd do a UK tour of request shows.

I wonder why people request other people's songs ?

Surely RT has written enough quality material to satisfy folk without wanting anyone else's songs ?

It is, isn't it - who'd have thought it'd sound so great as a solo acoustic number?

It certainly sounds like a ball for everyone involved, a lot of good banter between the audience and Richard. The numbers with George Galt are cracking as well, never really thought of harmonica as something to go with RT but it works quite nicely.

George was on the same Festival Tours trip that I went on, to Cropredy 2007.  We played music together each night with some of the others on the trip, in the bar at the hotel that we all stayed in in Banbury.  A very talented musician.

That has puzzled me too, even more so when the first time I saw him in 1986 or so in Oxford someone shouted out for "Shaking All Over"..fast forward to Vancouver in 2001 and someone made the same request..RT even played the first few bars.

I think he's a great interpreter of other people's songs too. His version of Briternay Spear's Hit Me Baby is sublime. I'm all for it!  Smiley

1986? Was that his solo gig in the Newman Rooms? (a church building just off St Aldates.) If so, I remember that! Then someone else called out for Stairway to Heaven  Cheesy

I think it's part of the challenge of the All Request Shows. He's been doing them for a few years now. Maybe people reckon he can cope with everything in his own back catalogue and are trying to catch him out...

Cheers

Was june tabor support that night, if so I was there as well with my best mate Mark. It literally changed his life and introduced a diehard leccy plank slapper to the joy of acoustic.
