I got an email recently about some recordings by Molly Drake, Nick's Mother, being released. Has anyone actually heard these? I can't find, for myself, a reason for owning them . . .

There's actually some stuff on Youtube (that I haven't bothered to watch). Can't see the recordings being any more exciting than any random parent's recordings.

You could be wrong there. Molly Drake seems to have been a singer (and composer) in her own right. In writings about Nick Drake (Maybe Iain MacDonald's piece about him; I don't recall exactly) there has been mention of the opinion of some, that his music shows some influence from Molly's music. For someone interested in the origins of Nick Drake's music that could be interesting. -- greeting from Holland, Hans Valk

This is not so new. Two of Molly Drake's songs were officially released by Island on a CD of Nick's home recordings called Family Tree. They're very charming old-fashioned numbers in the style of 1930s British musical theatre -- Ivor Novello, that sort of thing. Joe Boyd has said he hears an influence on Nick (can't hear it myself, except perhaps in his song 'Mayfair').

Yes, I got an email from Bryter Music about these only this morning, entitled 'Clothes of Sand'. I can't help but wonder what Nick would have thought about things like this.

Let's face it, they're just keeping him in a corner of the public eye. At this point he'd probably have welcomed the income.

I quite like the idea that you can buy the box and posters as a separate item if you already have the CDs and you fancy it.Bonus points that if you're a completist there's no more unreleased musical enticements included.Bargain price too,if you haven't already bought the albums.

There's something rather nice just been mentioned by Richard Morton Jack (authorised Nick Drake biographer) on the "Nick Drake - An Authorised Biography" page on FB. It's a folio (limited to 50 copies) by Nick's schoolfriend Jeremy Mason containing some collages and artwork. £40. It looks rather lovely. Get in there quick if you want one...

Here's another funny little Nick related thing recommended by Richard MJ who writes David Belbin fell for Nick's music as a schoolboy during Nick's lifetime, and wrote one of the earliest posthumous appraisals of his music. He has just written this clear-sighted and touching account of his relationship with Nick's music in the 1970s, which is mercifully free of the errors that pepper most publications about him. It also describes two other artists who made a similar impact on him. Only 250 copies have been printed, and can be bought via the links below.https://fiveleavesbookshop.co.uk/product/dont-mention-the-night/?fbclid=IwAR1QnaPhljQx3kyFKTwNmhYNBjvhYWT224CdVyUUkB1GIrT0P4z-8_i48Ys

I liked the Molly Drake album, and not just because of the connection, and the unthanks collaboration with Garielle Drake on the poems and songs is beautiful

Definitely - Molly's work can certainly stand up on its own two feet.
