The death of Jack Bruce has been announced by his family on his website at the age of 71.
Some people are dismissing this as a hoax but the website would have had to be hacked. The truth will come out eventually.
If it is true, I am very sad, JB is/was an immense musical talent.

This is being reported in some quarters as a hoax, who knows maybe the rumours of the hoax are the hoax. Someone is making a sick "joke" anyway. |

His Facebook, Twitter feed and Website all say that he has, indeed, died. The Press Association also have reported it hereThe first time I saw Jack Bruce was at the 1972 Melody Maker Poll Winners' Gig at the Oval in London. He was guesting with Focus when a string broke. He adjusted the tuning as he played and carried right on. An immense talent, a fantastic musician and a bluesman of legend. Here he is with Ginger Baker and Gary Moore. Wonderful. |

I was lucky enough to see Jack Bruce with his band in the (relatively) intimate surroundings of the Queen's Hall in Edinburgh in 84 and 85 when he did shows on the Festival Fringe. I didn't know any of his solo material but he played some of the old Cream favourites including White Room. I remember his drummer playing his kit with his hands rather than sticks on one number to great effect. Funny the things that stick in your memory from gigs. I dug out my copy of the Cream compilation Strange Brew earlier and had forgotten how great his vocals were on Swlabr... "you've got that rainbow feel, but the rainbow has a beard"  |

I recall hearing that the charmless Mr Baker was once voted "rock musician lest likely to survive the sixties"(!) Music apart, I loved Jack's dry humour. A fine example: ""It's a knife-edge thing between me and Ginger. Nowadays, we're happily co-existing in different continents [Bruce lives in Britain, Baker in South Africa] ... although I was thinking of asking him to move. He's still a bit too close"." |

I managed to see and hear Jack Bruce only the once...it was at Nottingham Palais in 1984. Jack was part of the Alexis Light Orchestra (a tribute concert to Alexis)...performing with Jack that evening in June were Ian Stewart, Charley Watts, Jimmy Page, Paul Jones, Dick Heckstall Smith, Don Weller, Willie Garnet, John Picaro, Roger Sutton and Ruby Turner.

Very fortunate to see Cream 9 years ago at Madison Square Garden. Apparently I didn't know quite how fortunate until I was told that they very nearly didn't go on because of extreme ructions between JB and GB backstage. It was only sorted out by EC laying down the law. Ironic given that he was very much the junior partner in the sixties. Glad he did because they were phenomenal.
