Buddy Emmons 1937 - 2015, great steel guitar player, probably most familiar around here for his contribution to "Crazy Lady Blues" on Sandy's "North Star Grassman" LP.

A master.  RIP Buddy.

John Taylor, jazz pianist, suffered a fatal heart attack while performing at a festival in Sevre (France) earlier this month. He was 72.  Best known for his trio Azymuth, he recorded over 80 albums, and appeared on many other artists' albums (including David Sylvian). RIP

Oh no. I love Azimuth .(please  note spelling)- one of a handful of jazz acts i listen to often. That's so sad.

Rose Garden was a one-off hit that I enjoyed immensely. 67 is just too young.

Legendary producer Bob Johnston has passed away.  He worked with Cash, Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, Cohen, the Byrds, Moby Grape, the Waterboys, and many others.  God speed, Bob.

And not forgetting that he produced 'Fog on the Tyne' for Lindisfarne, too.

I don't think I knew that.  Bob was quite a character by all accounts (notably Mike Scott's memories of him in his book).  They don't make producers like that any more.

Rico Rodriguez of The Specials passed away, aged 80

I'm not sure I could name another trombone player & he turned up in lots of odd places & his playing was always interesting. I can't remember who he played with when I saw him guesting, might have been Steel Pulse, but he stole the show.  Smiley

"Certain Surprise" on John Martyn's One World (LP: Island ILPS 9492) - it's almost straight easy listening, a tinkling bossa-nova, with Harry Robinson's lush orchestration and one of the melee of visitors to Woolwich Hall Farm, Rico Rodriguez, playing an incredible sweet trombone solo. Martyn was delighted with his ability: "Rico walked in, played the one solo and walked out," he recalls. "I couldn't believe it. It was a difficult tune - semitones all over the place, a tricky little number - and then he walked in and did it in one. I love Rico. One of my favorite people in the world. A gentle man. He reminds me of Scratch. Same build, same vibe". Quote from the booklet to the 2004 reissue of the One World - deluxe edition" (Wikipedia)
