RIP  Baron Von Tollbooth.

Sad times.

For me, him and Balin were the Airplane.

RIP  Baron Von Tollbooth.

Gutted. Not unexpected, but still a shock. So pleased to have caught his last London show.

Sad News indeed but not totally unexpected considering his recent health issues.  As  a massive Airplane fan this is a blow (against the empire....)
I got to meet him at a London gig about 10 years ago & we had quite a chat (largely about his choice of Rickenbacker guitars...)

Seems like a generation of greats are dropping like flys.....

Not a musician, but could be influential in his own way. Rest In Peace Sir Terry Wogan. Never an avid listener but his TV shows were an integral part of my youth and he was the person at the heart of children in need. Gave those he championed the opportunity to get to a larger audience, such as Eva Cassidy and probably Kate Rusby who would have lead people to genres they would have otherwise ignored. Cosy chat and cosy music will never be the same.

Crumbs. That is a shock, as unexpected in its way as Bowie.

Not really, he signed off from the last CiN, didn't he, as he was diagnosed & ill already? If not CiN, Comic Relief....

I think he was actually a better singer than he liked to admit. I have seen him sing the Captain Corcoran line in the trio from HMS Pinafore, and he did very well.

My mum drove me to school with wogan on the radio. I still smash the bottom out of boiled eggs. He is a national institution, and not old enough to die.
It's a bad time.
Bye, Tel.

He did his radio programme the Sunday before Children in Need but then dropped out on the day (and sent a recorded message, that was actually his last recording of any type). He didn't say what was wrong but gave the impression it was a short-term thing and just that he was too tired to do the prog ... I have a vague memory of thinking it sounded like a virus or bronchitis. He was a very private man, despite everything and the first we knew he had cancer was in the announcement this morning.

Apparently, according to two papers I've seen since I commented above, he had surgery on his back & this wasn't anything to do with cancer.

This is a lovely interview on RTE (Irish main channel) from about 5 years ago. It's 25 minutes, but if you've not got time, at 24:45 is Terry's reply to the question "what will you say to the great Director General in the sky when you meet him?"
