The Beatles may never have become anything like The Beatles as we know them without his input. He allowed them to grow and experiment and had the knowhow to capture it all, to make great suggestions, to orchestrate, and to play keyboards back when they were too green to attempt it themselves. I agree with every sentiment expressed here so far about George Martin, in particular that he was a colossus and the architect of modern pop music. Perhaps more personally, he shaped so many of the first records I ever heard. Not just the Beatles, Billy J Kramer's Bad To Me and Gerry & The Pacemakers but before even those, Peter Sellers and Bernard Cribbens and solid proportion of the records played on Junior Choice week in week out. Farewell George. It has been a privilege.

Sad news of the death of Jon English, I owned his Wine Dark Sea album which had some good tracks and covers on it. He was born in Hampstead and moved to Australia when he was 12 where he had most of his success, acting, performing it musical theatre, and recorded a few albums.

Re-watched the excellent Produced by George Martin documentary on BBC4 last night. It just underlined what a wonderful man he was. It also acted as something of a requiem for the days of big studios in exotic places (Abbey Road, AIR Monserrat (not sure of my spelling there) now that we are in an age where everything is recorded on a laptop in somebody's bedroom. It just isn't the same.

Too true. There's not much of a music industry left anymore, and certainly bands aren't getting those big recording budgets of yesteryear. I won't miss the age of the pampered rock star, but I will miss the age of studio experimentation and truly great professional engineers. Jules |

Jules I think Richard Thompson highlighted this in an interview, and questioned whether there would be another Sgt Pepper or Dark Side of the Moon. |
