The news bulletins on, that I heard, on BBC1 & R4 didn't even mention the dreadful m-d-a-l. Was this out of respect? Mary Whitehouse was right to criticise it, but for the wrong reason. It was just an awful piece of "music". The low point of a remarkable career.

The connotations....they couldn't play even a snippet these days, so very hard to mention it. Plus other well known numbers tgey did sample helped.
He was a year ahead of Elvis, so definitely the King if R 'n R

Bizarre interview this morning with Eric Burdon on R4's Broadcasting House about Chuck, clearly stimulants had been taken.

Eric has form on this. Back in the early 70s there was a tv interview where he answered every question with the single word "chicks". It wasn't a long interview.

I've been listening to a Chuck Berry Chess compilation this morning, and found my ticket tucked inside the CD sleeve from a concert at the Hexagon Reading in 1992. It was a mixed bag of a gig with a still sprightly Chuck duckwalking the stage while playing some of the sloppiest guitar imaginable but with the odd flash of brilliance, accompanied by a band who probably had no idea what he was going to play next, or what key he was going to play it in... The Chess recordings are still amazing though...Rest in Peace Chuck...

The Chess recordings are still amazing though...Rest in Peace Chuck... In the distant days when I had a vinyl player I had an album called 'Two Great Guitars'. It was an American import from the 60s and featured Chuck & Bo Diddley who, so the sleeve said, bumped into each other on leaving/entering the Chess studio. Purely instrumental interpretations of their songs, one side is Bo's stuff with each sharing the breaks, the other Chuck's likewise. Long out of print, I should think, but well worth a trawl.

Saw him once in the early 70s, 35 minutes of good stuff and 15 of my ding a ling. Some poor band trying to keep up and it wasn't great. Not by any chance at the Rainbow (I think Feb 1973) ?

Lead singer of The Foundations, Clem Curtis, has died at the age of 76. Their debut and big hit single Baby Now That I've Found You remains one of my favourite records.

The BBC now report that he's critically ill, not dead.
Rather a mistake, I feel.

Hardly unexpected. But at least it will have stopped all that fuss about R2 giving him the boot.

Updated statement from R2 Facebook page: Correction: Brian Matthew - an updated statement:
"We were informed by close family and friends that Brian had passed away in the night. They have since been in contact to say that he remains critically ill. We will update with more information when we have it. Our thoughts remain with his family at this very difficult time."
