Luke O'Reilly, champion skier and one time manager to Al Stewart and others. I came across his obit by chance, in The Times. Apparently he and Al were once attacked in London during the punk era, by angry punk hooligans.

Chikapa "Ray" Phiri, guitarist on Paul Simon's "Graceland" album, and therefore IMO one of the catalysts of the emergence of global music. Just 70, from cancer. RIP Ray.

All my children too Daughter Jenny went to see them only last week preferrig his concert to the opportunity of dog sitting whilst we were at New Forest. Not music I know, but clearly talented and popular   |

I was scanning through the Sky music channels yesterday and one of them had a full-day tribute to the man. I left it on for a couple of hours as I worked (online)and have to admit there was a lot of it I found entirely musical and accessible (some of it even a bit folky...), albeit with obvious but not too off-putting modern techno trends. He was definitely immensely talented, and a sad loss.

Good enough for this idle old get I had an album of his, may have been a compilation called Gurrumul featured a track I was born blind, a talented man but I just couldn't get on with it so I gave it away. |

I was really sad about this one. Ray Phiri and Bakithi Kumalo, who played so brilliantly on "Graceland," were both with Paul Simon's band when I saw him just last year. Wonderful stuff. RIP. |

Just found out that Pierre Henri, the musique concrete and electronics composer, died last month, at the age of 89.
In addition to writing scores for film and ballet, he recorded pieces with the Michel Colombier Trio (eg Pysche Rock - later remixed by Fatboy Slim amongst others - and a direct influence on the theme tine for Futurama!) and Spooky Tooth - the Ceremony album... so there's a tenuous Fairport/Island connection there!
