I'm a huge Moody Blues fan and Ray Thomas' flute playing was one of the things that set them apart from other bands. I remember back in 2002 when Ray quietly slipped away from performing with the band, saying he was going to enjoy his retirement and do some fishing. He and Mike Pinder guested on John Lodge's solo album last year and, of course, speculation was rife that he might be a bit more active in the future. But that wasn't to be. R.I.P Ray. |

I only saw them once ('84, I think it was - Brighton Arena) and I couldn't keep my eyes off him. Even when he wasn't playing he seemed right in the moment of the music. Very much the heart of the band in some regards, I've always felt. |

Though his contribution diminished on albums in the 80's and 90's he still had such a presence. I was listening to Live At Red Rocks this morning. On the encore of Ride My See Saw his vocal dominates, even though it is John Lodge's song. It keeps everything together. And on the early albums his flute playing was absolutely integral, and I loved his whimsical songs like Dr. Livingstone, I Presume and Dear Diary. I was reading a rather lengthy recent interview with him and one of the best things he recounted was that when the Moodies were doing the tours in the US with various symphony orchestras he had a lot of the flute players in those orchestras come up to him and say-I picked up the flute because of you. One even asked him how to make a flute scream the way Ray did at times. This despite him having no formal training on the instrument and a recognition that his technique was all wrong. I don't know why but that story really touched me. |

I saw him on his last tour with the Moodies in 2002, he was clearly not a well man but still sang and played flute beautifully. Shame the Moodies played so few of his songs live in their later years. "For My Lady " is all-time favourite of me & my wife, it was the first song on our wedding music. |

Nope, Phil died in 2015 so the classic line-up have all left the building. I saw Fast Eddie with his band Fastaway supporting someone like Iron Maiden in the mid-80s. I'm giving Ace of Spades a listen as I type. Top stuff. |
