In the late 70's I was on the way to an holiday somewhere at Gatwick Airport when I came across Steel Pulse in the departure lounge.
I started a conversation with one of the band primarily about how disappointed I'd been with Handsworth Revolution when compared to the versions of the tracks on the John Peel sessions.
I think that Grizzly was significantly older than the rest of the band, I then witnessed my fully suited extremely shy Father sat next to, and in conversation with, Grizzly about the difficulties in cultivating Dahlias or the nicest Germanium's. When we got on the plane he remarked what a nice man Grizzly was and was surprised when I told him that he was drummer in a well known reggae band.

How lovely. Mind you, your father was on much safer ground than you were, conversation-wise! Jules

I've never been able to get hold of them on disc but I seem to remember them to be far more radical than the finished CD?

The De Luxe edition of Handsworth Revolution has sessions from 77 and 78: available on Amazon on CD or download.

Sad. When was Jim in the Kinks then? I've just answered my own question (78-96). All the times I saw the Kinks then. Didn't know that...

Sad news, I saw him play at the Lunar Fest in 2016 with the Zombies and thought how good he was. DW

Ditto - saw Jim Rodford with the Zombies on the Oddessey (sic) and Oracle anniversary tour a couple of years ago. He ceded the bass to Chris White for the performance of the album, but lingered onstage with the chorus.
RIP

Hugh Masekela I saw him at the University of Kent at Canterbury '85-'86. Great gig.

Reports online Mark E Smith has died. People on the Manchester inside (Dave Haslam etc) are taking it as fact.
