Just heard it on the R4 news bulletin at 9pm. I knew he wasn't a well man but it's still a bombshell!

As did Marc Riley (when he found out of his death) for obvious reasons Mark was a great influence on him.

Didn’t get round to seeing The Fall until 2015 in what turned out to be a completely shambolic but thoroughly enjoyable gig. RIP Mark
(Of little interest to anyone other than myself, Mark was born the day after I was)

I never saw the Fall, although I did read about their ever-changing lineup from time-to-time. It's obviously sad when someone dies at a relatively young age, although it seems that he contributed to his demise through "sustained amphetamine and alcohol abuse".
I thought it surprising that his death was illustrated on the tv programme I saw by a video of him performing "There's A Ghost In My House", R. Dean Taylor's old hit. It was pretty **** - surely there's other performances that were better?

RIP Mark E Smith. I know very little of his music, but he was definitely a "character"

As it is (I think) their biggest hit, it's not that much of a surprise is it?

There's a Mark E Smith in charge of Lancaster University just now - http://www.lancaster.ac.uk/vc/senior-officers/smith/I don't know if he is a fan of The Fall but why would you make a point of always including your middle initial if you weren't? The Fall was one of these bands I was always aware of but never felt the need to check them out. I did buy a copy of Hex Enduction Hour several years ago but it just wasn't my cup of Tetleys. Still, it's a shame that he's snuffed it.

Many tributes online - seems he was well respected in the Drum 'n Bass/jungle/techno scene. RIP Jamie.

Tom Rapp of Pearls Before Swine Not exactly a household name but certainly one of the pioneers of psychedelic folk music. RIP.
