Incredibly sad news - I've been listening to Rush for roughly half my life.
A major force and influence in the world of drumming, a thought-provoking lyricist and a very precise man who set himself the highest possible standards - his unique contribution to progressive rock will be missed.

I have to say... Rush largely passed me by... I couldn't stand Geddy Lee's vocals. Fantastic drummer though, a sad loss.

I was just thinking of Geddy Lee the other day in the context of bass-playing singers as I'm going to see Limehouse Lizzy next weekend. I'll have to dig out my copy of Exit - Stage Left. Never been a huge fan of Rush but Spirit of Radio is one of those all-time great songs I never tire of listening to.

Rush were my favourite band for a long while, until Fairport came into my life, really, and one I still enjoy listening to. Very sad to hear this news.

There was an interesting post from Iain a couple of years ago on the SB&Q Facebook page that throws that into some doubt - 'Sailing is one of several of my songs wrongly credited in the early '70`s - A pain for all concerned ever since - Most people still get it wrong!' I've always had it down as Gav's song but I can't imagine why Iain would claim it as his own otherwise. https://www.facebook.com/sutherland.brothers/ |

I recall seeing the Sutherland Bros Band opening for Amazing Blondell in the early 70s at Birmingham Town Hall. After their first number one of the brothers (don't know which one) grabbed hold of the microphone to introduce the next song and the next thing he was on the floor shaking, with his hand still clutching the mic. It seems he was electrocuted. He was taken to hospital and made a full recovery, but that was the shortest support act I've ever seen! I also saw Quiver open for The Who in 1971 in Brum. But never saw the combined band...just thought I'd let you know!

Gutted. Saw them about 3 years ago. Really sad news...Gang of Four were such a great band, and Entertainment was on repeated play back in my teens...Andy's choppy angular guitar style always reminded me a lot of Wilko Johnson, but taken to a different level...Rest in peace sir... |
