Stunned. I revved up the wayback machine and determined that I saw JB four times: ARMS Concert (with Clapton, Page, Beck, et al) - Dallas, November 28, 1983 Brian Wilson and Friends/Jeff Beck - Houston, October 1, 2013 ZZ Top/Jeff Beck - Cedar Park, April 30, 2015 Paul Rodgers/Jeff Beck - Sugarland, July 24, 2018 He was perhaps the finest guitarist I've ever seen, and his sound and style were utterly unique. We got our photo with him, Brian Wilson, etc., in 2013, and his sour expression is priceless. RIP. |

Jeff Beck is one of those legends I have always admired in principle but actually know almost none of his music apart from guest appearances on half a dozen tracks on other people's records in my collection. I shall be putting that right, rather late in the day. RIP Jeff.

I dug up "Freeway Jam" from Blow By Blow on Youtube. I remember hearing this tune on FM radio in the late 1970s, which reminds me how good radio used to be. It was one of the earliest tunes I worked out on my brand-new Fender Stratocaster. It has everything - string bending, whammy bar, finger vibrato - that a young guitarist needs to express. The hook is actually quite simple and memorable. It's a brilliant composition.

Pretty much the same here. I bought one of his albums many years ago - one that Cozy Powell played on - but just didn't really get into it so rather ignored him from then on. I suppose with Hi Ho Silver Lining being such a well known song it must have clouded many people's opinion of him, like he was some sort of novelty pop rock guitarist. I only fairly recently bought a copy of Truth after watching a Rod Stewart documentary and think it's a fabulous album but with that line-up and guests like Nicky Hopkins and Keith Moon, what's not to like? I would have liked to have seen him with ZZ Top but never did see him on stage. And I think the first time I heard Shapes of Things was probably the Gary Moore version in the mid-80s. But it's sad that he's gone, especially as it was so sudden. |

Sad to hear this. She seemed destined to suffer from having such a famous father who of course died when she was just a kid. Then there was the whole business of her marrying Michael Jackson. I bought one of her albums more out of curiosity than anything else. It was pleasant enough listening but not enough for me to keep the cd. Tough on Priscilla having lost a grandson a couple of years back and now her daughter. |
