There are a number of posts on facebook which seem to suggest Les Barker has passed, is is sad news if he has he was only 75.

Sadly seems it is true. I saw him once at a folk club in Bollington. Whilst the rest of the people I was with had a drink at the interval, I was in need of oxygen. The tail of how he nearly killed my missus and me going down the M1 has been told to the family far too often, but will be dragged out again. His books of poems are used in an act my colleague and myself do around the schemes we work in, him singing, me reciting Les.

My eldest came with us once and brought a mate. The mate had disappeared at the end, we found him on the way out lying on the floor and holding his stomach. He was in pain from laughing so much. |

He apparently attended a local footie match on Saturday, got back to his car afterwards and was discovered there, sometime later. A heart attack is given as the probable cause. Les was 75 and had officially retired in October 2022 for health reasons.

I first saw Les with the Mrs Ackroyd Band at the Brampton Festival and then saw him on his own at that festival and at Chester. Always wonderfully entertaining and as others have said, he could leave you with tears running down your face. I see on the Mrs Ackroyd Enterprises website that he had recently announced his retirement from live performances. Sadly, I only saw Les once at Shrewsbury Folk Fest in 2007. He was brilliant. "Daschounds With Erections" and "Guide Cats For the Blind" are absolute works of genius, IMHO. Not, not IMHO. They just are.

A lot of comedians rely on bad language in live shows, Les didn't, he was funny enough without. He had the vocabulary and wit to cope very well without.

It strikes me that in a world where a small amount of talent is often hugely rewarded, it is so unfair that Les' huge talent didn't find greater recognition like Pam Ayers for example. Perhaps he was happy with his status. He stayed with us once when we ran a folk club and he proved a real gentle man, intelligent, quiet and a great human being.

This first appeared to be a hoax, but has since been confirmed and reported everywhere.  We got to see Croz six times altogether, all in Austin: CSN - 8 February 1994 (Frank Erwin Center) - They played as a trio with no supporting band; Croz teased some late arrivals in the front row, telling them "Don't worry, you didn't miss anything. We only played Suite Judy Blue Eyes, Wooden Ships, Woodstock..." CSNY - 10 April 2002 (Frank Erwin Center) - Unbelievably great Crosby and Nash - 12 April 2011 (Bass Concert Hall) - It was great to see them stretch out on their own material without Stills or Young; both were very talkative and they sold instant live mp3s CSN - 18 August 2012 (ACL Live) CSN - 28 August 2014 (Long Center) - Croz barely spoke at these last two shows; I think it may have been a condition of their performing with him David Crosby - 22 May 2018 (Paramount Theater) - This was my favorite; Croz talked a lot between songs, and he was always self-deprecating and sincere. He was in tremendous voice, as well. |

Re Les Barker, happy memories cam flooding back of my student days, when he did live gigs and also produced lofty tomes like these (well, they have sat around for 45 years...)
Interestingly, at the back of Mrs Ackroyd Rides Again there's an ad for "Les Barker's first LP - contain s selections from the [above] books performed by Les Mrs Ackroyd) [his dog], Mike Harding, Vin Garbutt, Bob Williamson, Jake Thackray, Noel Murphy, and others. Now I'd love to root that one out...

Quite bizarre that the old goat made it into his 80s but good on him for doing so. A complicated, difficult man that made some of the most beautiful and powerful music ever made. His stuff has been in my life for the best part of 45 years and subconsciously probably before that. Lucky enough to have seen him about 6 times, I think, and it was a joy to take my Bex to see CSN at the RAH in 2009 (I think). The CSNY 'brand' (and all who sail in her) is probably the music which most satisfies my soul. Music is Love, indeed. |

RIP Croz  I’m so glad I got to see CS&N maybe 10 years ago now? David Crosby had one of those voices that touches your soul. I never thought he’d get past 50 let alone 80 so good on him for that. Sad he never reconciled with the others but he knew it was his fault. Drugs makes you do irrational things. |
