A field such as folk music which by nature reflects on tradition and the past also needs visionaries, looking to the future, looking to innovate and to experiment. Ashley was one of these in the drive to electrify folk and open it up to new audiences. Simon was another fusing together traditional folk and world music in an inspiring and energising manner, his influence will continue for years to come and in The Imagined Village he has at least a magnum opus that will stand the test of time.

Simon Emmerson is a big loss. We became friends following the presentations of Hancock Awards to Imagined Village. I remember him going many miles out of his way to engineer a situation where we could meet Benjamin Zephaniah and present him his trophy (on the main stage at Cambridge Folk Festival in front of the BBC! Though the powers that be wouldn't let a Talkawhiler talk, so Martin Carthy stepped up...) We would meet up at gigs and festivals whenever we could, and he was always intent on dragging whoever of us he bumped into backstage at any opportunity to help share the rider. He was endlessly enthusiastic about anything and everything that connected to music and always found time to ask how things were going. Told terrible jokes mind... This is a film I took of Simon and Imagined Village in full flight at MusicPort festival in 2010. Jim Gordon, former drummer extraordinaire - died while serving a life sentence for murdering his mother (was diagnosed with schizophrenia). A tragic affair all round - Aged 77.

That's one of those pieces of info- murdering his mothrr- which i think I'd forgotten, the way you do later in life. |

By all accounts, for legal reasons, the band cannot continue without Rossington. So R.I.P. Gary and R.I.P. (for real this time) Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Is that right? Last I heard the tour with ZZ Top is going ahead. There have been plenty of shows played without Rossington in recent years. Per Ultimate Classic Rock magazine today, Lynyrd Skynyrd will indeed continue with no founding members. The article has details about the arrangement the current band made with the families of the deceased partners back in the 1980s, which originally required at least four members from the pre-crash era in order to exploit the brand. Apparently, the requirement has been revised downward as original members passed away, eventually whittling itself down to "one" original member. Now the departed members' families have issued statements supporting the continuation of the band with zero original members. |
