According to this obit on Pitchfork he released about 70 albums of which I have one! I think I discovered his music after attending a jazz evening class back in the 90s. I got quite into piano players like Horace Silver, Abdullah Ibrahim, Monk and Dave Milligan. The Jamal album I have had a steel drum player which was a bit different and a guest appearance by Stanley Turrentine. I flicked the radio on at 7 this morning and it was the first news I heard. Very sad. 'If you could Read My Mind' was one of the first pop/folk songs i heard which affected me deeply. |

The John From Austin Database (JFADB) says I saw Gordon Lightfoot five times. First in 2007 in Fort Worth, then 2009, 2014, 2016, and 2018 in Austin. Sadly, to my ears, his voice never recovered from a 2002 tracheotomy (though he denied any vocal chord damage). He whisper-sang, and his stalwart backing band mouthed the choruses to avoid drowning him out. Still, I felt honored to be in the presence of the legend. "The Way I Feel" may be my favorite tune on the Fotheringay album (Trevor was born to sing Lightfoot), and "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" is the best four-chord song ever written. R.I.P. |

'If You Could Read My Mind' was my second cassette purchase after Bridge OTW. A long time ago!
Edmund Fitzgerald and Canadian Railroad Trilogy....two of his finest compositions.
Very sad day........

Gord’s Gold was an early cassette for me and I loved it. Apart from the songs already mentioned, Don Quixote, Cotton Jenny and of course Early Morning Rain.

Well if no-one else cares to mention it , I bought the 7" single "Sundown" in my early teens, helping it reach no.33 in the UK , whilst it hit no.1 in the USA , RIP Gordon . I liked the B-side a lot too , but never invested in any LP's , pocket money only went so far I guess

That's it! The online guitar tab creators say he added the little finger to sus the D chord as well from time to time, although I'm uncertain that I can hear that. No bridge, no key change, just that pattern and fabulous riffs originated by Pee Wee Charles (steel guitar) and Terry Clements (lead guitar). It wears me out to play because it's so long.

Gordon Lightfoot is a candidate for my favourite singer-songwriter, one of a very select few where I really enjoy every album. Daft really, to let a celebrity death get to you but Gord's passing has hit me quite hard,
