A real shame. He used to come down to a music night that I also attend. Very friendly chap. Big talent too. He'll be missed, that's for sure. |

There's a moving piece by Theo Travis remembering JM on the Moonjune fb page. The Fairport connection is that Ric was a member of Soft Machine alongside JM in the late 70s, as documented on the Alive and Well in Paris album.

This is about someone I can guarantee nobody on here has ever heard of, but please indulge me a while. Today I was at the immensely moving musical wake of Ted Ponsonby, a massively talented guitar and dobro player with a heart of gold, who lived all his life here in Letterkenny. Starting off in the showband era, he played in various rock and blues bands through the years, including one with the sublime name of the Famesuckers (think spoonerism...). He was a sought-after session player on the national scene, playing, recording and touring with the likes of Mary Black, Maura O'Conell, Artie MsGlynn and Van Morrison - but apart from that he was a home bird who plied his trade locally through the years in a long succession of bands and collaborations, and it was always a joyful experience to see and hear him live, never better (IMO) than on the stage of a crowded pub.
So apart from within the industry, Ted's name is mostly unknown outside a 50-mile radius of his home, but he was a genuine local legend - a musical genius full of warmth, personality and humour to boot, and always giving of his time to support other up-and-coming musicians. And the reason I'm writing this here is because I reckon most towns or counties here and in the UK have their own Teds - local musical legends who remain unsung and unheard of outside the locality but who left a rich and everlasting legacy in the local musical folklore. They are, IMHO, as deserving of accolades as other more "famous" musicians, and so on that note, I say please all raise a glass not only to Letterkenny's Ted , but to your own local Ted, whoever he, she or they may be.

Awwwwwww... I knew every note of "The Last Farewell" 8-track tape that my father got from Columbia House circa 1975. The title track, "I Don't Believe in If," and "Durham Town" are favorites. I was over the moon when a vintage clip of RW appeared in "Life on Mars." R.I.P. and I so wish I had gotten to see him live. |

Sorry to hear of Roger Whittaker's passing. I did manage to see him live once, in York, he had retired from touring but he did another tour as he had missed performing.
