My brother had Escalator when we were younger. It was the best way to get me to leave the house.

My entire knowledge of Carla's work consists entirely of Nick Mason's 'solo' album Fictitious Sports.
At one point I would have claimed it was my favourite Floyd solo record, but I haven't listened to it for years.
I've never had the nerve to buy anything else of hers.
R.I.P Carla.

Carla Bley, apparently.
I have an album Silent - Michael Mantler which is on with Kevin Coyne and Robert Wyatt etc. it was a difficult listen, to me reminiscent of Pinter plays.

Very sad - I went to a concert of hers around 1975 at Dingwells in Camden - it was a private birthday celebration that she had decided to open the doors to the paying public. The band consisted of among others Hugh Hopper and Elton Dean plus her then husband Michael Mantler (trumpet). I think Gary Windo may have been there as well.
I stood next to Robert Wyatt who was in the audience - but was too awe struck to talk to him at the time. The venue was absolutely packed and there were calls for everyone to sit down which ended up both of us getting beer thrown over us - to which Robert made the amusing remark that he wasn't much taller when he could walk ("I am nearly five foot seven tall " reference to him singing on The Soft Machine (Vol 1) "Why Am I So Short?")
For me Fictitious Sports is probably the most accessible of her work - mainly due to the vocals of Robert Wyatt - I liked Escalator Over the Hill but Silence never really did much for me.
Her daughter, Karen Mantler's voice (sampled) is on Wyatt's album Comicopera.
Sad news

Thanking about it, a project involving Robert Wyatt and Kevin Coyne is almost bound to be a left field affair

Very dad, much too young. He was very good in Damage Manual, with Wobble and Atkins, too.

Brian Godding, guitarist.
Great side man on early Kevin Coyne albums such as Bursting Bubbles. Also a noted jazz guitarist.

We all knew that was coming...
A really fascinating enigma of a man...huge brain, and massive heart and some wonderful music to enjoy (much as I loathe Fairytale!). Privileged to have seen the Pogues at least twice in the 80s...they were great fun.
