Very sad to hear this - Sky, Lou Reed, David Bowie, Jeff Wayne's War Of The Worlds, co-writer of Grandad, etc...wonderful player with a brilliant and varied career...

Just saw this. I must have seen him with the Kevin Coyne band in the 70s. It's on the KC Facebook page.

Sad news. I've dug out my concert programmes having seen Sky on three tours back in the 80s though only ever got round to buying a couple of their albums. Herbie's biog includes the following... "Often a group's bass player would get a good sound on stage and a lousy one in the studio, or they'd leave the group to join another, so there was Herbie, easy-going, not too much of a clever Dick, cheap, ready to have a go." The sessions he did for Marc Bolan he described as "great rock 'n' roll; way in front of all the others" and he toured as part of T Rex with The Damned as support. He says Bolan's only rule was "no girls on the coach".

JD Souther, 78.
Very sad and obviously unexpected. He had just finished a tour and was getting ready to hit the road again. I saw him once, back in 2018 at the One World theater. Great songs, great stories, great singer, skilled guitarist. He joined the Eagles onstage recently, a glimpse of what might have been. RIP

I saw JD Souther (and stole a lyric from him) in Norwich, of all places in what, 2007? Judging by the set list, he wasn’t short of residuals, but a humble songwriter nonetheless, working at his craft and willing to share stories. A lovely one about Eagles turning down a submission for about thirty years before finally getting round to recording it, for example.

Now that's a name I recall seeing in the music papers way back when, but I have to admit I know very little about him.

Now that's a name I recall seeing in the music papers way back when, but I have to admit I know very little about him.
He joined Big Brother & The Holding Company after Janis left and contributed two songs to her Kozmic Blues album. His entry on Wiki also mentions some involvement with Quicksilver Messenger Services - he co-produced their debut album. Looks like he was an active member of the San Francisco music scene over the years and more recently toured with the Chicago Blues Reunion and a new Electric Flag Band. He released a new album earlier this year. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nick_Gravenites

Kris Kristofferson, age 88, R.I.P.
My database tells me I saw Kris five times:
May 23, 1987 - He opened for the Doobie Brothers at the Hollywood Bowl, which was the only full set I ever saw him do. May 19, 2007 - He played a couple of songs at The Road to Austin concert organized by Stephen Bruton, at Auditorium Shores. Ian McLagen, Bonnie Raitt, Eric Johnson, and several others were on the bill. Great show. June 26, 2014 - He appeared at the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame ceremony at ACL Live. I specifically remember his duet on Me and Bobby McGhee with Sheryl Crow. I believe he inducted Willie Nelson. July 6, 2015 - He appeared at Outlaw: The Music of Waylon Jennings at ACL Live. October 12, 2016 - He appeared at the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame ceremony again, at ACL Live. This time he was being inducted.

Never got to see him in concert but I've enjoyed his records and film appearances over the years. I just gave his 2006 album This Old Road a listen which was produced by Don Was who also played acoustic bass and piano. Willie Nelson is now the last remaining member of The Highwaymen at the grand old age of 91.

I did not have any of his music, how lucky to have seen him perform, so many times, John from Austin.
