Not widely known, but his 1971 self titled album is delightful, in a Nick Drake/Bert Jansch sort of way.

Very sad, he was one of the outstanding rock bassists of the 70s. Renaissance were never as good without him. I gather the he and Annie Haslam weren't on speaking terms for decades but I've no idea why. I've heard it goes back to 2009 when Renaissance reformed - it was supposed to be all the classic seventies lineup. Camp bailed, he did something else instead, then Tout had health problems, so Haslam got in other musicians in and that was that. There may also be animosity going back to 80s as Camp left during or just before a tour, and had also spearheaded the band's change of direction in the 1980s which wasn't particularly successful. Apparently there was a bit of bitterness about the way he left. I did read an interview with Camp where he did say he had spoken to Haslam (Mainly in the wake of Dunford's death) but they didn't 'discuss music' and while it was amicable, they would probably never work together again (But he was doing stuff with Dunford). Sad news, I discovered Renaissance in the 1990s when I was getting into 'Prog' (Too young to remember it first time round!) and picked up a lot of second hand records as they were not available on CD. Ashes are Burning and Song for all Seasons were my favourites, especially the title track on the former. I was friends with him on Facebook, which was 'interesting'?! |

He told endless (entertaining) stories and sang all the PP&M hits, as well as lots of traditional tunes. At one point he asked no one in particular whether there was a curfew, because he just wanted to keep singing. RIP |

I saw him with Lizzy on their farewell tour in 83 and then the following year with Whitesnake. There's now only Coverdale and Neil Murray left from that line-up. I lost track of what he was up to after the Whitesnake 87 album as I drifted away from the HR/HM scene. But he was a good guitarist was John Sykes. Very sad. |
