This is what I found on Wiki: After making the Saga albums with Alex Campbell and Johnny Silvo, Denny looked for a band that would allow her to stretch herself as a vocalist, reach a wider audience, and have the opportunity to display her songwriting. She said, "I wanted to do something more with my voice." After working briefly with the Strawbs Denny remained unconvinced that they could provide that opportunity, and so she ended her relationship with the band. |

Surely the timing is wrong for that to be the case. Sandy's work with the Strawbs was in 1967. Her audition for/of (!) FC was in summer 1968. In between she was a solo performer. |

That's my understanding of it too. I think she left during the period when Dave Cousins was trying to get a label deal for the album, which would have been towards the end of '67. Polydor showed interest but insisted that it would have to be re-recorded with better production, which Sandy declined to be involved in. This would have been when she started to plan for a solo album with Joe Boyd as her manager. The Strawbs continued with Sonja Kristina, later of Curved Air, for a very short time before reverting to a three piece. They signed with A&M in April '68, a month before Sandy auditioned for Fairport. |

After watching a clip of Fairport doing Mercy Bay at GBFF coupled with reports from some here about the performance, can I say how good and inspired they are sounding. Quite loud and aggressive, and Gerry in particular sounding great. Well done chaps.

IMHO Gerry is awesome  I've always had a soft spot for drummers and take a keen interest in their performance, whatever the band. Whilst I wouldn't put him in the swoon category (sorry mate), he is technically one of the best drummers I've seen. IMHO as I say. |

Being a big Mattacks fan, I remember when Gerry joined I had no reservations whatsoever about him. Notwithstanding his connection to the Fairport family for years before, his drumming has always been enjoyable to me, and I love how he has incorporated percussion instruments over the years as well.
