That horrible right wing Peter Hitchens of Mail on Sunday fame, had this to say about Meet on the Ledge, RT & FC. It's actually worth a read - too long to quote here...here's the link

http://hitchensblog.mailonsunday.co.uk/2015/06/old-forgotten-far-off-things.html

There’s a follow up blog when Hitchens reveals RT’s mother requested the song for her funeral. Did we know this?

He certainly is extremely annoying, but I have a slight regard for him as a man who says what he believes, no matter how far out of the mainstream that might be. His brother Christopher, who was unaccountably worshipped by various strands of society, said of him "I know that if I died he would look after my children, and I'm not sure I'd do the same for him".

Interesting piece - but the comments from readers that follow are even more interesting. They go from the thoughtful to the ridiculous to the most pretentious twaddle I've ever read. Great fun Grin

It reads to me like music criticism by someone who really doesn't like music at all. For a music person, music is unforgettable, or at least some of it is, but this bloke says he doesn't even remember what records he bought.  wtf? as they say.

Peter Hitchins is indeed a troubled soul, convinced we are all going to Hell in a Handcart. He's also an intellectual snob and I suspect getting excited about music would be seen as frivolous and beneath him (actually, I think the same when I see girls at a party leap up to do the Locomotion or the Macarena so maybe I shouldn't criticise...  Undecided )

It is sad that Sandy is no longer with, but she's not the only one taken early due to their lifestyle. I prefer to be grateful for what she did achieve rather than focus on her demise.

I don't even know who Peter Hitchens is but one thing he is saying which surely is true is that MoTL has a certain anthemic quality. Like Blowing in the Wind (considered by van Ronk to be rubbish) and Who Knows.... these semi-realised, dreamlike songs, are all written young, more or less first efforts. Richard may have written 'better' songs but I doubt if any of them reached more people than that one.

9/10 because I was timed out on the Genesis Hall question.  What is the answer to that one anyway?  I always thought it was about a squat.  Was that squat a church?

I guessed the question about Gerry Conway - I didn't actually know they were married.

But I'm still aghast that Jude got 8.   Wink

Alternatively, the squat was in an abandoned hotel in Drury Lane called The Bell. Although the citation link to the International Times archive doesn't seem to work.  Smiley
