Morning Jim, don't ask why but over the last yr I have been 'in discussion' with evangelical Christians in the USA . Of course you don't die , they would argue , just transition to another life in heaven! They have real problems with me saying ,' you die , that's it , it's over.' The fact it doesn't scare me also worries them. |

Because death is, you know, pretty scary. Jules So are tigers, but people aren't scared of the word 'tiger'. But we are not ultimately destined to be tigered whereas we are all going to be, at some point, deaded While this is true, I think the point remains: given that a word for x is not x, why be scared of the word in addition to being scared of x? That question seems to apply for all values of x, even the most inevitable. The best footnote in all of analytic philosophy, by the way, comes from Thomas Nagel in a paper on death. Here it is: "It is sometimes suggested that what we really mind is the process of dying [rather than death]. But I should not really object to dying if it were not followed by death." |

To clarify and respond to a few different individuals within this thread: I am not a Christian. I was an agnostic up until the spring of 2002, when I became a polytheist following my first experience with psilocybin mushrooms -- a profoundly spiritual event that remains the most life-changing, memorable, and important night of my life. I lost my fear of physical death as I reflected on the revelations that the 'shrooms provided -- including a rather direct overriding motif of "we are immortal." Granted, I've often wondered if the fungus meant that IT was immortal or that *I* too am immortal. I am not afraid of saying "died" or "death," but somehow "died to whatever awaits on the ledge and beyond" doesn't quite flow. If I'd known that my comment (meant to convey my sadness about the grief that the Peggs and others are likely feeling in the wake of John's exit from the mortal realm) would spark such a weird discussion about word choices etc, I'd have kept my damn fingers off the keyboard here and conveyed my condolences privately. |

I think it's sad that a thread like this, which should be offering sincere condolences to Peggy and family, has turned into an argument about beliefs and terminologies, with no seemingly no respect whatsoever to the deceased and his loved ones. People grieve in different ways, and they also express their condolences in different ways. All that matters is their honest intention. Words are beautiful, but they are only words.

I never met Mr Pegg, but it sounds like he was a talented woodworker and more importantly a good bloke.
As such his leaving us is our loss, it matters not the words we choose to express our sorrow, or any belief in deities we perceive might be involved..
For his family to have produced at least two talented, decent, sons is an achievement to be proud of.
I am sure he will be missed.

I see that the official feed is stating that Peggy's big brother, John has died (sorry, 'passed away' in the ubiquitous but meaningless manner we are supposed to describe these things nowadays). He was, gulp, 82.
RIP John - He did a lot of work for me around the house. He'll be much missed as a friend. His Christmas cards were legendry. His funeral is in Banbury on December 5th. Anyone wanting more info, drop me an IM |
