While reading a potted online bio of Dave "Clem" Clempson - as I'm planning to go and see JCM (Jon Hiseman, Clem, Mark Clarke) next month, I read that following the split of Bakerloo, Clem and Cozy Powell planned to for a new band - recruiting one David Pegg on bass.  Clem was then approached to join Colosseum, so the band never happened, but all three went on to exciting pastures new - Jeff Beck and Fairport (& Tull).

Interesting.  Never heard that, although Cozy does play on Harvey Andrews' Writer of Sings album, I think (from memory) with Peggy.

The new trio (Clempson, Powell, Pegg) was going to be called "The Beast" !     (source : Meet On The Ledge by Patrick Humphries)

I seem to recall that Clem briefly formed a 'power trio' with Cozy on drums and Greg Ridley (ex Spooky Tooth. Humble pie) in bass circa 1975...
Saw him in Oxford with the reformed Colosseum (late 90s??) .He was fab!

Cheers,

Can anyone think of another band who have had more lead singers than Fairport?

I think 8 : Jude, Ian, Richard, Sandy, Swarb, Trevor, Simon and Chris with Ashley, Peggy, Maart also featuring every so often.

I'm pretty sure there's a similar picture of this line-up in the booklet with the 'Many Ears to Please' cd

Went to a friend's 50th birthday celebration this weekend, and met up with another friend from Uni, who I hadn't seen since those far-off days.  I was wearing last year's Cropredy t-shirt, and she said that she remembered having a tape someone had given her which she had worn out years back (sounds like it may have been the old 'Woodworm Years' album).  We had a long chat and I ended up recommending a couple of FC compilations and she has said she is really interested in coming to Cropredy!  Whether she does or not is another matter, but it was fun making that connection.

In case anyone needs convincing to get a copy of the new live 2CD What We Did On Our Saturday - I'll be playing some tracks from it (pre-release, probably first airplay ever) on my radio show this Thursday night!  The songs suggested by that nice Mr Nicol including Time Will Show The Wiser and Sloth.

It's from 9pm Adelaide time which is 11.30am Thurs UTC, and you'll need to figure it out from there!  Listen in via the website www.threedradio.com or search the station name in all appropriate app stores to listen via phone, and on demand later.

I'm not actually sure which part of the show it'll slot into as there are other interviews and "unusual" stuff to play, but it'll be there.  Smiley

Thanks to Stevie at Iconic and Simon at FC for bringing this about.

I thought one or two might be interested in this.  I've just recently joined the Glastonbury Fair 1971 page on FB.  Amongst my fellow recent additions is one Jack Wruff who wrote:

"Thanks for the add. I was H Cow roadie. We were on site 4hrs 10 minutes. I drove our black with black stars Bedford ambulance to the stage. Played after Fairports. We set up our Altec PA as band was very unversatile at that time.very odd. Remember Dave Swarbrick, face full of a big joint, being weirded out and mezmorized by Cow music. Much like the audience, dumb founded, listening to musics that was very oblique to the spirit of the festival. Then we packed up and I drove us back to Cambridge. I might have quite liked to have stayed, being a tiny bit more wayward than the lads."

Anyone care to give me a realistic valuation on a truly outstanding first pressing of the debut?  It's priced (charity shop) at £150.  Fair?

I think they've been researching. I've got a mono copy  Grin , which I bought from Richard Thompson and has his name on the inner sleeve. Unfortunately its not THE Richard Thompson  Sad. He used to idolise his namesame and on stereo versions of things used to turn off one channel to lose Swarb.

Well, there was this picture in the second issue of "The Ledge" (March 1984, I believe) fanzine, when Martyn Kenney was the editor/commander in chief.

It's by Gijsbert Hanekroot, but I didn't know that then, so Martyn didn't either  Wink
