From the Potted History of the Festival on the FC website:

In 1979 Fairport decided to call it a day and, having opening up for Led Zeppelin at Knebworth in the early afternoon, tore across country in their van to do an outdoor Farewell concert at Peewit Farm on Station Rd in Cropredy.

So next August is undoubtedly the 40th anniversary of that.

So that being said the 30th anniversary logo on my 2010 festival t-shirt is wrong  Shocked...oh well

If you count the first one, then this is the fortieth one.

If you count the years SINCE the first one, it isn’t. So I reckon it IS.

No not really. 1979 was the Farewell Farewell final gig. 1980 was the first reunion so was the first Cropredy festival. That probably explains the 30th wording in 2010.

Sorry for causing arguments but all I wanted to know was why 2010 was the 30th anniversary and 2019 is going to be the 40th. Just a simple question... Undecided

See your point. Taking what David said out of the equation, it would have actually been the fortieth occurrence of the festival this year,  but forty YEARS since the first one next year. (I was forgetting next year is 2019 in my previous post.)

That does not explain the 2010 situation, though.

As noted below above (it was below when I was typing...), 2010 was the 30th Anniversary of the first Reunion festival at Cropredy, whereas next year is the 40th Anniversary of the Farewell event. Wikipedia says that there had been festivals at Cropredy since 1976 (and Wikipedia is ALWAYS right Smiley ) so neither 2010 nor 2019 are anniversaries of the first cropredy festival. That's my take on it - if I'm right do I win a prize?

If you're counting 1980 as year 1, then 2009 is year 30.....2010 would be year 31....(go on, count 'em on your fingers)

I don't have that many fingers!!

All I'm suggesting, as others are, is that they are anniversaries of different events. 2010 was the 30th anniversary of the first reunion festival in 1980, next year is the 40th anniversary of the farewell festival in 1979. Neither are anniversaries of the cropredy festival itself, which predates 1979. Both t-shirts are valid.

OK I think we can put this to bed now. Consulting my 2010 programme confirms what Darren has said...2010 was the 30th anniversary of the reunion festival with the reunion coming 12 months after the farewell performance in 1979 so 2019 will be the 40th anniversary of the farewell. If only the guys had made it clearer we wouldn’t have had to go through this discussion and I’ Sorry I started it. Happy now to finish it  Smiley

So, in years, the above is correct. In 'Cropredys', this year is not a significant anniversary

My mum has unfortunately just had to go into an old people's home … which raises the question of what that has to do with this forum. Answer : every time we drive there we go past The Angel, Little Hadham. Big decorative pub sign holder is still there, although obviously sign itself is long gone. One of these times I'll have to unleash my inner 18 year old by driving past with window down, CD at full volume playing the delight-ful song!  Happy New Year all !
