or they were far enough north, but as they get older they are understandably staying a bit further south.
What's the connection between age and geography? I think they just know where their market is now...

Simon signed a copy of "Rise Up" on the last night of the Albion Christmas Band tour ,which we agreed was a stellar moment in this folk/rock thing we all enjoy. I actually prefer "Prospect" but that's just through familiarity , and he laughed and told me the live sessions were really good fun for "Prospect" , which as a fan , was great to hear. Sadly the days of mega line ups to create such art is long gone. Lucky the sound is so good on those 2 LP's , sounding both medieval & modern

I think he just filled in because Gerry Conway had left and they had this TV date. I found this on a discussion of the Broadsword boxset: "This is very interesting excerpt from [Bruce Rowland's] interview with David Rees from A New Day magazine: Had you been aware of Jethro Tull and their music beforehand? Oh yes, very much so. I travelled all across the USA in 1969 and 1970 with them when I was with Joe Cocker, and I’ll be honest and say that I didn’t get on too well with them. As for the music – I couldn’t stand it! A Song For Jeffrey was a nice little number, and there were times on stage when the band really did cook, but that was all down to Martin Barre. I never did like Ian Anderson much, and from what I have heard I didn’t like the way he fired Gerry Conway. I think that’s why they needed me, because they’d got rid of Gerry forgetting that there was a TV show coming up; and Ian Anderson certainly wasn’t going to go cap in hand back to Gerry. And when we did the 1982 TV show, I really did think the keyboard player [Peter Vettese] was a knob. So that’s about that. I’m happy for you to include me in your article, but it was not a particularly happy memory for me. Really I just did it for Dave"

He claims to have been very fond of Gerry, regards him as one of his favourite drummers but that Gerry himself was uncomfortable playing Tull's style of music and found it very stressful, particularly on tour and that they came to the conclusion he was just the wrong drummer for the band. Anderson held him in high enough regard to invite him back to play on one of his solo albums where the music was closer to Gerry's wheelhouse. I'm not defending IA. He does seem to be a bit of a sh1t and doesn't care who knows it but his expressed affection for Gerry seems genuine.

It's amazing how HMV sell what are effectively boots these days, isn't it? They're supposedly grey area 'radio broadcasts' but the quality on the latter is certainly fairly 'basic'. Not heard the Evanston one...but I strongly suspect it's similar.

I refer the honourable gentleman to my comments regarding this earlier… on: December 26, 2024, 02:22:14 PM “Currently ‘enjoying’ the vinyl version, courtesy of Santa. Does, indeed, sound like it was taped off the radio. An a.m. radio, in the middle of a quite severe electrical storm. Whoever was in charge of the live sound could have probably done with a comforting arm around their shoulder, and the person who put the writing credits together presumably did it with the air of someone who’s been included in the pub quiz team because they once knew what the capital of Paraguay is and had the back of a fag packet to hand.”

That's all i need to know then. Thankyou guys Of course, i didn't buy either. I was just killing time, in HMV. The branch where i live keeps a wide selection of vinyl but much of it is at ridiculous prices, so they won't be getting my custom that way either.

Not heard the Evanston one...but I strongly suspect it's similar. The Evanston disc actually sounds pretty reasonable. Nobody is going to claim it is audiophile quality but it is fine. It just suffers in comparison to Before The Moon which is always my default listen for this period. The Chicago disc however is, as everyone has said, utterly unlistenable. I am amazed it got through the net even as a grey market release. I have a few of these type of releases by various artists including Dylan, Springsteen, John Hiatt, Little Village etc. They are mostly perfectly decent, if variable. The Fairport Chicago disc is a definite exception to that rule, not even reaching a minimal quality standard in my view. Heck, it almost sounds bad enough to have been released by Free Reed!

I picked up one of these online for £3 delivered... Not seen it before. It's from 2008 and includes footage and interviews from the 2007 festival, both on site and in the village. It's a nice little thing...just 09:45 long, clearly designed as a promo for 'brand' Fairport/Cropredy. If it's not already there, and I can be bothered I'll put it up on YouTube.
