One of those weird ones where more people will probably own a 'boot' recording of it than will ever purchase the 'official' release, I imagine!

I got wind of this today, too.  I don't own any version of it and never heard of it before.  The setlist looks standard for the era, with no surprises.

Is it worth acquiring, he asked?

The standard boot recording is a decent '74 show - and a nice recording for the period.  Will be interesting to hear what sort of sound quality it is, but I very doubt I'll be buying it to find out...

There's apparently an audience recording and an FM broadcast, which is shorter....I'm guessing that this is the FM.....another Sloth to add to the collection, anyway.

Audience:
1. Matty Groves
2. Solo
3. Sloth
4. It'll Take A Long Time
5. Dirty Linen
6. Brilliance Medley
7. Like An Old Fashioned Waltz
8. Rising For The Moon
9. The Ballad Of Ned Kelly
10. The Hexamshire Lass
11. John The Gun
12. Down In The Flood
13. Jigs
14. Six Days On The Road

FM:
1. Matty Groves
2. Solo
3. Sloth
4. It'll Take A Long Time
5. Dirty Linen
6. Brilliance Medley
7. Like An Old Fashioned Waltz
8. The Ballad Of Ned Kelly
9. The Hexamshire Lass
10. John The Gun
11. Down In The Flood
12. Jigs

Sandy Denny - vocals,
Dave Swarbrick - fiddle,
Trevor Lucas - guitar,
Jerry Donahue - gutar,
Dave Pegg - bass,
Dave Mattacks - drums

The dates are uncertain.
Although the DJ starts the FM broadcast naming the recording from May 8,
Clinton Haylin insists that the audience recording was from May 16
and FM broadcast from May 17.

Tracklisting for the CD appears to be:-

Matty Groves
Solo
It'll Take a Long Time
Dirty Linen
Brilliancy Medley/Cherokee Shuffle
Like an Old Fashioned Waltz
Ballad of Ned Kelly
The Hexhamshire Lass
John the Gun
Down in the Flood
Sir B. McKenzie's

Looks like the FM broadcast, but minus Sloth.   Sad

I'd much rather hear live recordings from other lineups before this time, rather than adding another '74 gig to Live Convention, Before the Moon and the Live at the Troubadour set, all of which I already have.  Looks like Brilliancy Medley is the only track that doesn't appear on any of these.  Probably will pass unless I find a very cheap copy.

Oh please, this is 40 years old (the website says "Recorded live at My Father's Place, Old Roslyn, New York, USA on 8th May 1974"), it's almost certainly not going to benefit the band in any way and this has been knocking around for ages as a boot.

If you want to throw money away, try JustGiving to a worthy charity.

I guess they axed Sloth to fit it on one CD.  Not the first time this has happened, if memory serves.

Neither do I, but if the band actually get paid then I consider this to be a positive.

It will therefore be another of these "grey area" releases whereby US radio broadcasts that are more than (I think) 30 years old become public domain and can be sort of legally released in Europe (but not the US). The recent Spirit Of Radio set by Bruce Springsteen was of similar provenance but sold enough to make the UK album chart so sales are obviously tracked and appropriate royalties should therefore accrue.

I'm not sure that I am interested in yet another set from this era either, especially without Sloth but I doubt that there are many US FM radio recordings out there for earlier incarnations of the band. I would really like to hear something by the Angel Delight line up.

Definitely not due to time restrictions, the full broadcast is only 71 mins. I've had several versions of this over the years, and I remember one did omit Sloth, apparently some very bad radio static rendered it unusable. Hopefully this isn't a copy of that as there are far better (and more complete) versions from different captures of the off-air recording. It does look like one of those semi-legit releases of US radio broadcasts, which are generally just copies of widely circulated bootlegs, rather than from the radio station's own tapes.

There's a very interesting one from Ultrasonic Studios, Hempstead, NY from 14 March '72 - an excellent quality 13 song set by the Hill/Farnell/Pegg/Swarbrick line-up, that would have been far more interesting than another from the '74 and '75 tours. However, to the people who put out these sort of releases a set featuring a more celebrated line-up including Sandy is always going to be a more commercial proposition compared to one by a largely forgotten version of the band.

Whilst we're on the subject of wish lists (I love Ultrasonic too) I would please request an official release of The Manor Sessions.. Given current relations between the 2 'main' figures in this lineup that is about as likely as a very unlikely thing, but still...  Smiley

Well it won't be an off-air version.  My best is that it'll be the source you mention, and that's why Sloth will have been axed.

I'm pretty sure it will be an off-air, I don't think a pre-FM version of this has ever surfaced, all circulating copies are from various recordings from the broadcast. Assuming this is another of these semi-legit releases I think it's certain the label responsible won't have sourced the tapes from the radio station, if they still exist of course. Of those I've heard - the two REMs, RT's Folk City Broadcast and Neil Young's Cow Palace show from '86 - they're all just copied directly from commercial factory-pressed bootlegs, even when there are better quality, non-booted, versions in circulation. The RT CD, for example, was just a copy of the awful Alone With His Guitar boot, which was made from high-gen tape of an off-air recording, even though the soundboard masters in pristine quality were available. I hope I'm wrong and whoever is putting this out is doing a proper job with it, but I rather suspect it's just another cheap knock-off.

Here's the official link I just received from Spin CDs (I just now saw that Jules posted this above at the beginning of the thread):

I appreciate all the comments here.  This group is a valuable resource for evaluating such purchases before the money is spent...
