OK, a guy I know, a rock-n-roll guitar player, has never heard of Richard Thompson. I want to either show him a YouTube video or play him one or two songs, to back up my claim that there's no one else who plays like him and there's a reason why he's always on the various Best Guitarists Ever lists. Suggestions?

Play him "Shoot Out The Lights" (title track, of course) for its truly unique Stratocaster mangling, followed by "1952 Vincent Black Lightning" for acoustic finger pickin' balladry. These textbook examples should encourage him to investigate further...

Thinking about this question I overlooked this song when thinking through perhaps more obvious titles. But what a powerful performance. Courageous song-writing and intriguing and dramatic guitar playing. Probably needs a Vincent or SOTL to seal the deal but great suggestion.

There are some pretty good live versions of 'Can't win' on youtube - I think there's one from Bristol a few years ago that I would recommend. I can't check youtube in work, but I'm sure it'll come up in a search.

Great suggestions, guys, keep 'em coming. What I think I'm going to do is make him a CD, a "Best Of RT's Guitar" or something. Terrific as his songwriting is, this needs to concentrate on the playing. I need 70 minutes or so. The one of the two from Guitar/Vocal suggested here so far is a definite, maybe the other if there's room. Probably a few from "More Guitar," too. Many of the others suggested sound like they'd be right (Shoot Out The Lights, Vincent, and I need to go back and listen to that Hokey Pokey version). What else?

OK, made the CD. Very hard to trim all that I chose to just 80 minutes (and even then had to edit away silence at the beginnings and ends of some of them in order to make it fit), combined with what I owned on CD -- I just couldn't go down the digitize-from-my-LPs route. What he said, it convinced me 40+ years ago. It and Calvary Cross I had always loved Henry the human fly and his FC records but it was Pour down like silver that really did it for me and then in fairly shory order Guitar,Vocal came out and proved that he had taken it above and beyond |

Beeswing is another - it's a beautiful example of RT's composition skills - I like a blistering solo as much as the next man, but I really love a good harmonic accompaniment.
His voice too - he's a great singer, I don't mean he has a huge range or masses of power, but he delivers the song perfectly, with all the emotion you'll ever need.
(+ pretty much anything from Strict Tempo on the geetar front would do)
