Very good review - the only thing I can add from talking to those that attended was that Shirley did sing, on her own, a couple of her songs at an afternoon chat with Stewart Lee in the Purcell Room next door to the evening venue. Unfortunately, I heard about this too late to reorganise my weekend, but I wish I had been able to be there. Lastly, a snap that Trembling Bells tweeted of the rehearsals....

It'd be great if that chat found its way onto YouTube. Jules

Nice piece (despite the shocking misplaced apostrophe in the final sentence). Jules

Not sure whether there were cameras present at the chat - but there were 3 fixed at the evening show, all level with the sound guy. Whether there is a DVD to follow, or was just as a momento for Shirley & family, we'll have to wait & see.
I suspect there will be snippets included in the film underway on Shirley that was crowdfunded

Yes, there was a fixed video camera no more than 15 feet away from our seats in row AA.

As this was an event to celebrate her 80th birthday, did none of the original musicians who played on the album wanted to partake?

I think RT is currently on tour in the US. I'm ever hopeful that something may emerge with RT, AH, SN & DM with perhaps the wonderful Olivia Chaney and Lisa Knapp reprising their vocal/fiddle/harmonium duties. Cropredy 2016 perhaps?

I'm not sure that having Ashley around would be all that great for Shirley tbh.

The afternoon 'in conversation' was riveting. I enjoyed it more than the concert. Low point for me was the interminable anecdote from a certain young man, which resulted in Alasdair Roberts and John Kirkpatrick doing only one song each in the first half. Stewart Lee's "It's a pity" spoke volumes. PS It took me a while to find this thread. Never thought to look in Fairport Convention

Yes indeed, it only served to make me dislike him even more than I already do PS It took me a while to find this thread. Never thought to look in Fairport Convention me too!

Sam Lee.
Spent a whole 15 minutes introducing his song, which went for nearly 10 mins!
But not really his fault - there didn't appear to be any stage management (Stewart Lee was MC, but he hardly knows stage management) & I doubted SL knew how lon he had been allotted (10 mins each/2 songs it seemed to be)

11 minutes and 30 seconds to be exact, to say nothing of the amount of time spent enduring endless absolute drivel from the so called "comedian" Stewart Lee

I realise that but many others played on the album, I am just surprised none of them were interested.

I have a friend who went, and is quite a fan of Lee (as am I) who almost agreed. A pity. My programme and vinyl appeared just now (very well packed - thank you Fledg'ling)...very nice indeed.
