I stumbled upon a copy of an Allan Taylor CD with two albums (both from 1971) on one disc: Sometimes & The Lady. Of most acute interest to Fairport Convention afficionados is that on Sometimes (12 tracks) Mr. Allan Taylor is backed by Dave Pegg on bass, Dave Mattacks on drums, and Dave Swarbrick on fiddle. DM also plays drums on The Lady (10 tracks). Seek out the 22-track CD with both albums on it -- Amazon U.S. lists it as Sometimes / Lady. Amazon U.K. calls it Sometimes / The Lady. Enjoy. Just had a look at his website. http://www.allantaylor.com/news/index.htmlUnder March 8th 2013 is the following: One extremely interesting item for Allan was the telegram from Fairport Convention in 1969 saying “Urgent – ring Fairport”. This resulted in Fairport inviting Allan to join their British tour (first gig at The Albert Hall). After the tour they recorded a demo of Allan’s song “Sometimes” (co-written with Miles Wooton) that got Allan his first recording contract with United Artists Records. So, Allan owes a great debt to Fairport Convention and has always made public his respect for all of the members of this group.
By coincidence, Richard Thompson (a founder member of the group) was playing a gig in Leeds last week (4th March) so Allan had a chance to meet up with him. (photo) |

There is a track featuring Allan Taylor on the Cropredy Capers box set - he sings Lady of Pleasure with Fairport. The original is on an album he did with a band called Cajun Moon, which you can get on a twofer with The American Album, both very good.
First saw him on the seventies at Lytham Folk Club, where the guys from Fylde Guitars were involved (link to last Fairport album) and then again touring with Dick Gaughan.

I saw Cajun Moon a couple of times. Great band.
I do agree that Allan Taylor has been a sadly overlooked artist.

Goodness gracious, one of my early folk heros! Used to play my local folk club regularly when i was a 6th former.... didn't he join Fairport on stage more recently? (Well sometime in the last 20 years) absolutely must look up the back catalogue.there are a couple of songs i should dearly love to hear again.
