There is an article in Mojo, where Linda Thompson suggests Sandy was sacked by Fairport in November 1969, I wondered if anyone has any insight or opinion on this? Link to part of the article http://www.mojo4music.com/19696/sandy-denny-was-sacked/

That doesn't surprise me in the least.  It has the hint of truth about it.

Have to agree, just surprised I had heard nothing about it before.

The MOJO article is lifted pretty much wholesale from IAKAU (as no-one refers to it).

I possibly should get round to reading that, after all I have had it since Christmas!

Whether she was formally sacked or not, only the chaps can say, but Ashley certainly proposed it.

Paraphrasing from Pamela Murray Winters' unpublished bio of Sandy:

After a trip to Denmark that she turned up for 2 days late as she was drunk and AWOL, Ashley was adamant that she couldn't continue in the band with this behaviour.  “Girl singers are far too much trouble,” his bandmates concluded. “Let’s just go on, just us chaps.” However when she arrived, all seemed forgiven. Upon their return to Blighty, Ashley left Fairport almost immediately, traumatised by a rough flight back on top of these events. Sandy departed too, setting up home with Trevor Lucas and encouraged by Joe Boyd and A&M, who had the publishing rights on ‘Who Knows Where the Time Goes’, announcing initially she was going solo in Melody Maker on 20 Dec 1969, but in actual fact forming Fotheringay, much to Joe's disappointment. He had requested and gotten a $40,000 advance from A&M for Sandy’s solo career but that was "frittered away" very quickly on Fotheringay.

"Girl singers are far too much trouble" - I wonder if those were the actual words used?

Probably not. More of an assumption of what was said, as I doubt the writer was there when whatever was said was said. And that doesn't sound like Ashley. Anyway it was all long ago and I wasn't there either  Smiley

Well certainly if Ashley is so wary of "girl singers", it's taking a while for him to change his ways.   Wink

I sort of thought that Jude, because the words used doesn't sound like the way things would have been expressed in the late '70's.

“Girl singers are far too much trouble,” his bandmates concluded...

It wasn't him, sir - it was the other boys...

As Jude says above - it doesn't sound like Ashley.
