Having just spent a lovely couple of hours listening to various Sandy Denny albums, I had the idea of a mini sampler of tracks for a friend, as a kind of potted introduction to Sandy.

But if you had just 20 minutes (5 tracks?) of recording space at your disposal ?...Which songs would you choose to put on the tape to inspire your friend to search out Sandys catalogue further ?...Solo or band collaborations...It doesn't matter...  Smiley

Apologies if something similar to this has been done before... Embarrassed

This may be quite a bit over 20 mins, but Hey Ho !...I know !...It's impossible... Undecided

1/ Late November.
2/ John The Gun.
3/ Next Time Around.
4/ It Suits Me Well.
5/ The North Star Grassman And The Ravens.

Got to have Who Knows Where The Time Goes in there.  The Pond & The Stream from the Fotheringay period maybe.  Late November?  Sweet Rosemary?  It'll Take A Long Time?  Ah God, I dunno.  5 random tracks?   Wink

Two of my favourite performances by Sandy were songs that she had no hand in composing.

'Ballad of Easy Rider' and best of all 'I'll Keep It With Mine'.

Good calls, both...my five today would be those two, Solo, Sailor's Life and Late November.  I don't really enjoy WKWTTG any more.  Heard too many poor cover versions....and if I'm honest, I think it's one of the few performances where I think Sandy 'oversings'.  I have no idea if this is even a thing, but it makes sense to me...

I have a problem with Sailor's Life as first intro to Sandy. I love it now but on first hearing it might be a bit off putting (almost too pure folky, duck for cover). I certainly would not include that just yet. Ease them in with other balards.
I am very interested in this tread as I also want to get people into Sandy. I will consider all suggestions.

Taking the above points in mind,
immediate top-of-the-head quickie response:

Who Knows... (just because)
White Dress
Tam Lin
North Star Grassmen ...
The Sea

Now ask me again in half an hour...

I think the opening track on Sandy,  'It'll take a Long Long Time' is mainstream enough to grab a lot of people straight away, but after that I find it difficult. Sandy's lyric writing was indiosyncratic, and her melodies aren't always predictable either. 'It Suits Me Well' would be a must. A fine song- - tells a story, mid tempo, great singing. If you want Fpt stuff included, there's just so much choice.

I do wonder if we're listening to the same track?  It's a feckin' all out psych-folk freakout!  Well, it is in my head any day....

These are two of the main reasons that I, and many others love her writing.

Oh sure, me too. I think it would also be the things which might initially scare people off.  Cool

Dawn, John the Gun, and No End for sure.  After that, it gets really hard to pick just two more.

Imho only, that's an incredibly minor piece in her canon of work.
