A last minute discovery that 'The New Radio Ballads' performed by Bob Fox, Jez Lowe and Julie Matthews was on at Blackwood Miners Institute, just five minutes down the road, prompted me to pop down. I'm so glad I did. It was held in the downstairs bar, rather than the main auditorium, which was perfect, as it gave the evening a sort of 'folk club' feel that fitted in well with the occasion. Quite why they have chosen this year to celebrate the ballads, which were first performed in 2006, I have no idea, but who cares?
They started the evening singing three Ewan MacColl songs from the original radio ballads from the late 50s/early 60s, including one of my old favourites 'Jack of All Trades', then three songs from each of the six 'new' programmes. As Jez and Julie had been part of the team that wrote them and Bob had been involved in the original performances, they were able to give plenty of background details regarding the songs' origins.
A fascinating and highly enjoyable evening that I nearly missed. So glad I browsed my emails and saw the advert for it on Friday morning.
I saw the show last year and I thought it was wonderful. Such a talented group and the song writing and story telling were fascinating. I hope they keep returning to the ballards for new shows, they have so much material they can use. |

Just back from RT at the Royal Albert Hall - phenomenal. So many special guests, and what a set list! Highlights included:
-Danny Thompson, 85, and still bossing that double bass during Al Bowley.
- the guests, including Ralph McTell, Squeeze and Crowded House, playing their hits with a beaming Richard Thompson playing along
- the hugely talented extended Thompson family, especially during Bright Lights. Linda T running over to kiss Richard at the end of the song, prompting Kami to archly say that it’s not often her parents share a stage these days!
- everyone on stage for a rousing Tear Stained Letter - I counted 8 guitars!
- finishing the set with meet on the ledge; felt very right for some reason that I can’t articulate.
Loads of other high points, but I’m too knackered to think right now!
Sounds utterly fab! Jules Any more Fairporters (other than DM) in attendance if not actually on stage - Simon? Available to listen to on the usual. |

Jules That YT idea would have been a better option than digging the box out, but I didn't think of it. I have done now. It's not a great track, no. But, having come from a self financed non-record label recording before they were actually Pink Floyd that's no surprise. My favourite song from that set is Walk With Me Sydney which is hilarious. It's certainly not Syd like, more early Stones cover version with a touch of MC5. I guess a lot of the audience reaction is maybe down to Syd popping up, like John Lennon on screen duetting I've Got A Feeling at Macca concerts. |

I, Spie by The Telling at The Gregson Centre in Lancaster on Saturday night. Described as a “concert-play” (where music and theatre collide) if 16th century music is your thing I can highly recommend it. The musicians accompanying the play include fiddle player Giles Lewin who I see was a founder member of Bellowhead. The play is described as Spooks meets Blackadder. The Lancaster show was sold out but we were told that they are struggling to sell tickets at other venues. They've a few more dates coming up including Stratford-upon-Avon tomorrow, then they are on to Folkestone, Colchester, Bedford, Cardiff and Liverpool. https://www.thetelling.co.uk/i-spie |

I am literally floating in another realm ….a dream came true last night, when we saw Rufus Wainwright at Eden Court, Inverness…For me, a transcendental type experience to even hear this man’s voice, live!
I will tell more when I have come back down to earth.

Karine Polwart with Dave Milligan in Kendal on Saturday. Really enjoyable evening's music. Seems they've known each other for ages but only recently started playing together as Dave is mainly a jazz musician. Discovered that KP is artist in residence at the Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh and they did a lovely song about an old palm tree which had outgrown the glasshouse and had to be taken down.
Almost a full house at the Brewery Arts Centre which was good to see but Kendal is one of those places with a sizeable retired population with the cash to spend on these sort of gigs. She said this was the only venue they've played twice.
