I'm lucky to have a couple of good ones locally. They stock all the performers you mention (along with things like Dodgy's Free Peace Suite and The Thrills' So Much For The City, which seem to be compulsory for charity shops, in my neck of the woods) but they also often have gems at reasonable prices, happily.

Interestingly, cassettes are starting to overtake CDs, price-wise, in a few of them.

The Al Stewart boxed set is £500 on amazon, but only  £325 at Burning Shed. In relative terms, I think the latter sounds like a bargain. 🙂

Based in West Yorkshire but I spend a lot of time in Cumbria and South Wales. It's mostly been in Oxfam (especially the specialist shops) that I've noticed the price of cassettes overtaking CDs but there are a couple of places in the Lake District and Swansea where I've spotted a similar trend.

Just adding an observation to the charity shop discussion : I certainly find the odd gem on my occasional trawls, but I find it alarming that the majority of cd's on offer (apart from the obvious landfill) are albums made in the last 25 years. No "classics" to be found.

Potential old f**t remark : does this mean that modern music is rubbish, that popular music's best years are behind it ? Has pop eaten itself ? Or is this an indication of how people buy music these days : purchase cd, rip the best tracks, donate to chazza ?

I've got hundreds of CDs stacked up at home from the early 1980s to today. Love to sell them off but

a) 200 or so are from the USA so their barcodes don't work for the "we buy your CDs" sites

b) Even when they do recognise the barcodes, they offer me pennies.

Can't be arsed.

JS Bach Complete Orchestral Suites - Boston Baroque

Mapa - Uakti (Brazilian ethnic/avant-garde percussion)
Ezza - Alkher (N.African blues/rock)
Ken Burns' "Best of" Louis Armstrong
Uniko - Kronos Quartet & Kimmo Pohjonen
Clown - Markus & Simon Stockhausen
Trios - Rob Wasserman

and, for the princely sum of 20p, a CD of classical pieces composed by Sir Anthony Hopkins - sadly, not on the "Hannibal" label.

I bought from Burning Shed and the service was excellent. You do have to pay delivery but it's only £8. Amazon , when it's in stock!,was £590 when I looked. My best mate has also bought it. Believe me it's great.

Oxfam are by far the most expensive of the Charity Shops. You'll never buy anything from there that qualifies for this thread.

I find that I'm more likely to find something of interest in our Oxfam book and cd shop whereas other charity shops tend to mainly display pop cds from the last 20 years or so, I suppose partly because they have less space to display cds.

I volunteered at a BHF shop several years back and discovered some real gems - it looked like someone had left their cd collection to the shop. So there were albums by Dylan and all sorts of other 60s/70s artists. I don't know what happened to them all. The shop manager wanted me to concentrate on the books and dvds as presumably they sold more of those.

When we moved, we sold a fair number of books (and a few CDs and DVDs) through Ziffit.  Didn't get great prices for most of them, but better than nought, and usually £20-30 for a boxful.
