RIP Judy Dyble (13.02.49 – 12.07.20)
Very sad to hear the news that Judy Dyble - original female voice of Fairport Convention, co-conspirator of Giles, Giles & Fripp pre-King Crimson, half of the duo Trader Horne with Jackie MacCauley and remarkable solo artist has passed away following a long illness.
In 2009, my ex-partner and I were relief managing The Blue Posts, a pub round the corner from London's 100 Club. When Judy held a launch party for her solo album “Talking With Strangers” there, her then-manager contacted me and asked if they could use the pub's function room for a pre-gig meetup and a post-gig drink, of course. The date was set, a couple of weeks after that year's Cropredy Festival, and was a wonderful occasion. Great to meet several fans of her music, and the gig went swimmingly – Judy's band including her old Fairport cohort Simon Nicol who had also played on the album. A lovely day all round, and one of which I have fond and proud memories.
Her marvellous second bite of the cherry as a musician (indeed, she named her autobiography “An Accidental Musician”) continued, and I enjoyed catching some of her mini-residency at WM Jazz in the O2 complex – she'd found the right blend of sympathetic musicians and was growing in confidence. In one of my emails to her, I joked that she'd get a taste for a touring – become a gigger. Her response was words to the effect that she enjoyed it but wouldn't go that far.
But, carry on she did – culminating in an emotional appearance at Cropredy 2017 – Judy totally owning that hallowed stage with her material, her musicians and her beautiful, pastorally English voice wafting over the field. The set included a full rendition of the 20 minute epic “Harpsong” which showed off her prog-rock tendencies.
And the collaborations continued with the likes of Mark Swordfish, Dodson & Fogg, The Conspirators, Sand Snowman, Big Big Train, a Trader Horne reunion and her brilliant album “Summer Dancing” with Andy Lewis – released on Acid Jazz Records.
From then on I'd always refer to Judy as “Acid Jazz Records recording artist...” as opposed to “folk rocker or progger”, and this extra layer of “street cred” appealed to her wicked sense of humour !
And it continues...her collaboration with David Longdon of Big Big Train “Between A Breath & A Breath” will be released this coming September.
The last time I saw Judy was exactly two years ago today, at the Anvil in Basingstoke, the occasion being a Big Big Train gig – they were warming up for their appearance at Night Of The Prog in Loreley, Germany. Lovely to see her as always, and we exchanged mirth and remarks about weight loss (my general lack of !).
The news of Judy's illness came through at the tail end of 2019, however, she kept her veritable army of Facebook friends updated every stage of the way, never a grumble to be heard. Her domestic and gardening escapades and strange recipes kept everyone amused, likewise the tales and photos of her beloved rescue greyhounds.
With her folk-rock foundations and her prog-rock collaborations, Judy was a one off and a truly lovable English eccentric. She will be sadly missed. Sleep well, marvellous Judy.

When I joined Talkawhile in 2007, Judy was the first person to welcome me and make feel part of the community. She was an ever open, friendly, welcoming presence and this place in particular will be the poorer without her. It has been such a privilege that she would share her time and her world with us in this way. So long Jude. Safe travels. I will be raising a glass of e e Cummings in the Arms.

She was a friend, a lovely talented lady and the effort she put into welcoming and helping people here was tremendous.

Ah, dear Jude. Such a kind gentle talented lady.
She helped me greatly, with little messages, when things were tough, for which I will always be grateful.
She was part of the heart of this board, through which so many of us connected.
Sleep softly Jude, your dogs are waiting at Rainbow Bridge for you.

Jude was always so welcoming and wise with her comments. I have got to know her music and her words are wonderful. Such a talented and thoughtful person. A sad loss.

Very sad, just heard on the news.
I first became aware of her as one of us, here...then learnt more about her music. Great condolences to her friends and family. I will miss her thoughtful and helpful replies.
