David, and orhers, youre welcome to jeear my system amy time you're in the area and i promise you no lectures  - only a comfy seat and a cuppa  🙂

Here's an analogy. I don't drive so this may seem simplistic so forgive me. A little runaround car at a modest price  will get you from a to b effciently, and in relative comfort, without breaking down, and that's what a car is supposed to do.  A ' high end' car  costing ten times the amount will do just the same thing.  But i think most people will agree the experience of driving the  better car is much richer and gives more pleasure.  So it is with audio.  A basic system will play a  disc and give you something like music. A better system will take the experience to a different level. If a demo in an audio store doesnt convince you then the dealer doesnt deserve your money and you'd be crazy to spend it.
Theres a subjective factor around hearing too.  Many people have damage in that respect.  I think Andy dpoke sbout thus a while ago.

How often did you go into a hi fi shop, start looking at an item and the salesman came over and the first thing he said was "I've got one of those at home."

I was in my home town of Guildford recently, and was pleased to see that the shop where I bought much of my hifi as a teenager/student is still there. I'm still using that amp and Wharfedale Diamond speakers as my TV and iPod sound system.

As my hearing deteriorates, "Hi-Fi" becomes a bit of a joke.

I can, however, stream audio through my hearing aids.

OK, enough.

The topic is "Listening to..." not all this twaddle.

I'm listening to 3 Daft Monkeys' "Information Camouflage". It's rather good.

Amble. I've heard them described as the new Mumford and Sons but don't let that put you off. Quite mellow and laid back, all acoustic, bass / baritone vocals.

Also Ellie Gowers new EP, officially released next Friday but some tracks available on streaming, and I bought the CD when I saw her live earlier this week.

I happened to come across the website of The Society of Strange and Ancient Instruments and downloaded an album titled 'The Longest Night' which is instrumental music played on Hardanger fiddles, Swedish nyckelharpa and clàrsach.

Lol.  He joins in the conversation at 11:53, and then decides his magnificent contribution needed to have been the last word on the topic seven minutes later precisely.  We have a new definition for...well, something Grin

Here?  The magnificent first entry to the 30 Days of the Dead thing (see elsewhere)

Arf.

It's the 1st installment of 30DofD also (thanks for the reminder), my money is on it being from Cleveland 02/03/81.  Happily, this coincides with the arrival of "Dave's Picks vol.52" from Santa Fe 11/09/83. Not their finest hour, but not too shabby.  Smiley

Surely it's earlier than that?  Sounds far too trippy to be 80s to me.  Well, if you're right I need to up my 80s quota considerably (I can normally spot Brent's ploddy old organ at 30 paces).

That's the one

And to get back on track, I'm listening to Paul Simon The Concert In Hyde Park to purify my ears of the dreadful soft jazz thing that HMRC had repeating every 10 secs or so as their hold music.

Paul Mosley (“Aye, like the fascist - no relation, mind…”). Came up on the mobile listening station while I was both on  the way to visit my mother in hospital and simultaneously mulling over the question “What’s a harmony?”. It’s not a cheery song, but it is brave, honest and - much like a slap in the face - both unwelcome yet enlivening.

Square Roots compilation from 1987, courtesy of a post on the UK & Irish Folk & Acoustic Music 60s-80s FB page about it, following which Ian A Anderson discovered that the download version is still available online: https://frootsmag.com/01sqrts373 (if there are others who might be interested).
