Man - Life on the Road - On Air 1972-1983. Only just started working my way through the 4 CDs and 2 DVDs in this new box set. Quite a lot of this has been out before but on long out-of-print releases, so it's good to have what amounts to virtually all their remaining UK radio and TV sessions in one place. The 1974 Horizon video is, for me, the jewel here, I remember bunking off school just to see this at the time back in those pre-video days, amazing that this BBC Schools programme managed to escape the Beeb's mass wiping policy in the 70s.
Sticking with a vaguely Man theme, I picked up a twofer CD of The Neutrons' albums, recently, along with Alkatraz' only release. Very enjoyable, indeed. Don't know anything about this/them...what's the connection with Man? Phil Ryan & Will Youatt. They were both in The Neutrons, who, on their first album, also featured Gentle Giant's John Weathers on drums and violinist Stuart Gordon, who's played with everybody from Peter Gabriel to Massive Attack. After The Neutrons' demise, Will formed Alkatraz with his former Quicksand bandmate, Jimmy Davies. Both bands are worth a listen, I think. |

I keep meaning to get this. Must rectify. One of my all time favourite bands at Cropredy - that 1994 slot was brilliant. No idea if its true but I remember them mostly wearing grey suits and looking utterly dull but playing the most amazing set of psychedelic influenced Welsh rock. I saw them 2 or 3 times afterwards as well...once at the Patti (with the Racehorses supporting) in the late 90s. Great, great band. It was great wasnt it . i think the instrumental intro to the first number lasted 25 minutes. Something I'd normally shy away from but not this time. |

Currently reading Keith & Monika Domone's biography of Barclay James Harvest which has inspired me go through their discography chronologically. What a brilliant band! Hardly any misfires through twenty plus albums even after the blow of losing Woolly Wolstenholme and Les & John's Great Schism.
Speaking of Woolly, I've got the Maestoso boxed set ready to go next!

I'm not sure I need to do my 1982 albums. It would be a sort of mash up of Andy's & Jules's. I'll check if there are any surprises though.
In the meantime I am listening to a 1985 album, the self-titled debut by The Dream Academy.

Yeah, yeah, bllame the software. Personally I find it very hard to stay in the same room as 80s Elton. Jules I largely agree after '83 but I really like the Too Low For Zero album and Jump Up contains two of my favourite Elton songs, Empty Garden (his moving Lennon tribute) and All Quiet On The Western Front. |
