Lore of the Land - Order of the 12
Right up there in my annual list. What do you reckon? It has taken a while to grow on me so not at the top of my list for the year but I do like it. I just find it doesn't stick with me very long after I have listened to it.

Soft Machine : Fifth (Sony remastered CD, 2007).
Soft Machine : Third (Sony remastered 2CD, 2007).
The latter includes a fine live performance as a bonus disc, Softs live at the proms, 1970).

Where do you stand on the later stuff, Alan. I've always rather pooh-poohed the Jenkins era but i've fallen hook line and sinker for Bundles this year, to the point I could almost say "It's my favourite Soft Machine album" with a straight face.

I ordered Esoteric s vinyl reissue of Bundles a month ago. Nuff said?🙂

"Before Your Time" Simon Nicol
I particularly enjoy "Over The Lancashire Hills" , especially the drums , that session bloke Dave Mattacks I think
I continue to avoid "From A Distance" though , and "Sherwood Rangers" isn't a patch on the Prospect Before Us version
one to watch , young Simon , based on this first solo effort ,

I don't tend to listen to too much new music hyperbole these days. Virtually nothing I hear for the first time moves me in the way that stuff I've listened to for a while...but I've been reading so many people I know raving about Weyes Blood's new album I thought I better give it a listen. I'll be honest, I've heard the name but I think I thought they were a rapper or something. Mistake. And in the Darkness, Hearts Aglow is an extraordinary album. Doesn't really sound like anything else but whilst I was listening to it the two artists it made me think most of were Joni and John Grant. Make of that what you will. But do give it a spin...

I listened to that too last week, for the first time in quite a while. I think it is the template for much of the later Fairport's cannon of work counterbalanced of course with Chris's "story songs". I tried to give it the benefit of the doubt at the time, but I'm not a fan. It's just too (old school) Radio 2 for my liking.

I do quite like the album but it was clearly intended as a way for Simon to express himself in those terms outside of the band (given that some of the band actually play on it from what I recall). However what happened next was that some of the songs from the album got imported into Fairport's then live repertoire and as you say, that does seem to have influenced their future direction, particularly during the remaining Maart era. I do think the Chris/Gerry era represents a further change of direction toward a more acoustic vibe. Meanwhile my Monday morning listening is Live At The Fillmore - 1997 - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

Mike Oldfield : Incantations CD).
Apparently true Oldfield fans often regard this as his masterpiece. I heard it for the first time yesterday evening. Maddy Prior sings on it.

I quite liked it, though it is rather long. Hints of Ommadawn, and I liked Maddys bit.
