The three This Mortal Coil albums.
I bought a second copy of Filigree And Shadow as part of a 'buy two get one free' offer, to keep in the car when I couldn't find a third album I hadn't already got. I was surprised to receive a brand new Japanese gatefold digi-pak version complete with obi, inner sleeve and the works. Being a fan of 4AD artwork, I bought the other two albums in the same format. The artwork is beautiful.
The music is too, and sounds great. I've been wallowing in the floaty ambience for the last week or so.
Wonderful stuff.
Do they have the Sixteen Days 12-inch in that package too? There are various other is bits and pieces of theirs that are worth taking down. The Lonely Is An Eyesore compilation is a good place to start. This Mortal Coil got me through my finals at Uni. They were always beautiful. Cheers Nick

There is apparently a compilation called Dust And Guitars in that format, which contains Sixteen Days (Gathering Dust), Sixteen Days reprise and Acid Bitter And Sad from Lonely Is An Eyesore.

Dust and Guitars looks like a decent compilation to get. I never tracked down a copy of 16 Days on CD, and the 12 inch was little use except as a picture after I had my turntable nicked.
I shall have to have a search, thanks!

Synanthesia : Synanthesia (Guerssen LP, 2023).
I'm glad I waited for a decent reissue of this. Nice, pastoral psych-folk with sax, flute.

This week I am mostly listening to:
The new Blur album. A Steve Hackett live album. Reissues of the first two Marshall Crenshaw albums. A Michael Penn anthology. A Matthew Sweet compilation. A CD of Stax demos (free from Mojo magazine and very good). The only album by Hank Marvin & John Farrar.

Today I'm listening to Aztec Camera: Knife, Stray and Frestonia, having realised that it has been years since I last did.

The Fraternal Order Of The All : Greetings From Planet Love
Andrew Gold's 1997 album, hailed as a psychedelic masterpiece, gets a well-deserved remaster/reissue today. Affectionately paying homage to the great artists of the 60s and 70s (insert their names here), singing most of the vocals and playing most of the instruments himself, Andrew Gold has created an utterly authentic period retro listening experience. Doesn't go quite as far into pastiche as Neil Innes and The Rutles, but nonetheless very enjoyable. If you like the music of Jellyfish, Wondermints, High Llamas and others of that ilk, this is definitely worth a try... I'd love to see this recreated live, however, as Andrew Gold sadly left the building in 2011, that's unlikely. This fine album is a testament to his many talents...

Janis Joplin : Farewell Song (Music on Vinyl, marbled turquoise LP, 2023).
Rather a mixed bag of live and studio recordings, featuring her band Big Brother and the Holding Company. Originally released 1981.

Jefferson Airplane : Volunteers (Speakers' Corner LP).
I suspect this would be a great album if it were better produced. As it is, it's just a good album.

When I bought it I had an old Dansette type record player and it sounded marvelous to me!

Seth Lakeman's Kitty Jay which, believe it or not, was released 20 years ago.
I first saw him in the days when he was backing Cara Dillon with brother Sam. Can't remember the last time I saw him on stage. Possibly at Folk by the Oak several years back. I think RT was on the bill too.

(Kerry Andrew as) You Are Wolf with a lovely new version of Reynardine https://youarewolf.bandcamp.com/album/reynardine-singleI saw Kerry supporting the Owl Service about 7 years ago, and she was superb. She's been poorly recently (CFS) though so it's great to hear her singing again.

Suzi Quatro & KT Tunstall - Face To Face
A collaboration of which I was previously unaware 'til 7.30 this morning (Radio 2's "Record Of The Week", apparently. Shows how often I listen 😆). Two generations of feisty 'n fierce female musicians who turn out to be big fans of each other create an album of marvellous original material. Nothing ground-breaking, but very listenable and well-crafted. It's a natural sounding partnership, and they audibly had an excellent time making the record. Suzi & KT's voices blend really well, they certainly have a musical kinship.
I live in hope that they tour together - maybe a KT set, then a Suzi Q set followed by the two of them joining forces for a live rendition of this splendid album ?
