Angeline Morrison “The Sorrow Songs : Folk Songs of Black British Experience”
I bought this after hearing the track “Black John” on the freebie cd from the February edition of Mojo.
Haunting and, at times, harrowing.
Sorry, that should be Uncut, not Mojo Aye, I definitely didn't spot her on Heavy Nuggets Vol.7   That would have been somewhat incongruous! |

Acid folk band comprising ex forest member Martin Welham and his son Tom. They've made 3 albums and I think this is the best.

Having just finished reading the Nick Drake biography by David Morton Jack (Nick Drake - The Life) I've been listening to his three albums. 'Bryter Later' was the first one that I owned, many years ago, and I'd still pick that as my favourite - especially 'Northern Sky'. But 'Five Leaves Left' and 'Pink Moon' have their moments, too.

Sometimes I feel the positive thing about Nick Drake is the fact he left us 3 perfect albums. I've been listening to them for a long time now and I find it difficult to pick one as the best. Each one is beautiful in its own way. |

Anne Briggs : Sing a Song for You (Boweavil LP, 2007).
I bought the CD of this when it came out and confess I was slightly underwhelmed. This vinyl edition sounds a good deal better. It took a long time to surface in the first place, and it isn't perfect- the band sounds a bit bored sonetimes- but I do like it now.

The Lost Words: Spell Songs, and their recent live recording: Gifts Of Light.
I got the first a couple of years ago, to accompany the wonderful book by Jackie Morris and Robert Macfarlane, but it has been sadly neglected of late. Making up for that now, having just got the live album via yesterday's Bandcamp Friday.

Never heard of that myself. There was a Dec 1973 concert from Fairfield Halls on the Come All Ye boxset, but this seems to be something different, judging by the setlist, which is quite different. |
