On the 33rd anniversary of his death, we are fondly remembering Freddie Mercury (5 September 1946 – 24 November 1991) by listening to Queen today.
He was definitely a One.

A few weeks back I did those first three Furs albums back to back. Just brilliant - some of the best music around. We saw them a few years back - still great. When I had a second hand bookshop in Sedbergh twenty years back, the Butler boys' Ma used to come in and talk about how worried she was about her lads with all their naughty US based habits. Lovely lady. Utterly hilarious. |

I wonder how the Butlers' mum ended up in the far North. I very much enjoyed the first four Furs LPs, and now and then I return to them. It's an interesting journey as they shed members one by one and then embrace soft-focus commercial production. Richard's rasp, his lyrics, and a hint of melancholy in the melody lines always kept things interesting. I'm less enamoured with the sound of the guitars which always seemed to be awash in reverb and/or chorus, but maybe that's just me. I saw them live at Glastonbury in 1986 and by then they'd become horribly flash and shallow. Their fifth LP was appalling. I blame their "naughty US based habits". Jules |
