After reading all the reviews of the Ashley Hutchings birthday bash, I’ve been listening to the Guv’nor series, followed by the Free Reed set, and at the moment the very fine ‘Captured’ by The Albion Band. Shame that the short lived lineup with Keith Hinchcliffe never did an album. One more of those great guitarists Ashley has worked with
When was Keith in the band, Robert?

When was Keith in the band, Robert? Captured contains radio sessions from 1991 & 1992. Keith appears on the 1992 sessions. While I'm here I might as well document today's selections on a rare opportunity to listen to music at length. 40 Odd Years - Pulp (Mojo magazine covermount CD of rarities from across Pulp's career) Innes Prime: Live Recordings from 1979-2015 - Neil Innes (terrific newly released live anthology from the late, great man, released by his wife and son through his website) Who Believes In Angels? - Elton John & Brandi Carlisle (I had zero expectations of this and had not intended to buy it until I heard a track on the radio in the waiting room at my physiotherapist's. Turns out it is a thoroughly entertaining set and the best thing Elton has been involved with for 30 years or more).. If It Wasn't For The Music - Ian McNabb (the new, upbeat, catchy and gorgeous sounding album)

When was Keith in the band, Robert? Thanks for the save Al. I’m at work so can’t give you details on the sessions Al mentions but will try to work up a list for you. The sound was actually a precursor of sorts to the more recognized acoustic band-I believe it was Ashley, Keith, Simon Care and Julie Matthews. Stay tuned

Well I thought there was actually more, and maybe there are on other compilations, but I only found 5 tracks with Keith Hinchliffe in my collection from 1992 or thereabouts
From Captured- Chapel Kelthack/House In The Country Up The Crooked Spire Set Their Mouths To Twisting Hanging Tree
Hutchings/Hinchcliffe/Matthews/Phil Beer on Set Their Mouths and Hanging Tree. Simon Care on Chapel Kelthack.
The Guv’nor 1-3 Bampton Morris Tunes-Hutchings/Hinchcliffe/Care/Matthews

Just looked at the Captured cd, and its actually Chapel Keithack, not Kelthack. It's a Scottish tune. I wonder if they chose it because of Keith's involvement?

Time for me to get some new glasses then! I did have a quick glance at the book for the Free Reed Ashley Hutchings box. I saw Keith mentioned in passing but didn’t see any recordings listed. I know there are some other Albion compilations out there so maybe more has been unearthed but in terms of what I have that’s it. Now listening to As I Cycled Out On A May Morning, which is one of my favorites of Ashley’s solo projects

Looking in the 2nd volume of Ashley's biography, there is mention of a live version of Seneca Two-Step on a compilation album from the Rudolstadt Festival in July 92 by the Hutchings/Hinchcliffe/Care/Matthews line-up with Phil Beer guesting, but nothing else I could see in there. Keith Hinchcliffe does also appear on two tracks from Sway With Me.
I guess we will never see vol 3 of the biography now - it seems that they were planning it, but the 2nd volume came out in 2007, which is a long time to still be working on it.

And the second volume was of course never published in print form...CD-rom only...I expect it wasn't felt the audience was there?

Wasn't that sold in an auction recently just before Andru sold the house? That's the one. My mate Nick bought it. He's a devoted fan of MC, and met him a couple of times, including a guitar-playing workshop that Michael gave. But Nick's a left hander, so he brought it to mine so he could hear it being played. It was an honour. Jules

Lovely psych folk/pagan/drone LP.
