Cropredy 2018

« on: August 11, 2022, 09:24:17 AM »

Just in case folk's haven't seen elsewhere it has been announced there is to be NO cooking allowed in the campsites unless in a specialist leisure vehicle (caravan / campervan) - this means no BBQs, no butane rings burners, no camping stoves.

They're not the only festival to have this rule this weekend.

...which was ignored by many. Not us. But many others had their stoves on in the morning to boil a kettle.

Why am I not surprised?

However, there were no signs alerting people to the 'no open flames' policy as we entered field 4, and none as far as I remember on the big screen over the 3 days. We did our breakfast fry ups and kettle boiling in a responsible manner as did many around us, gas stoves on a table with water to hand just in case. As far as I'm aware there weren't any issues. i did spot smoke rising up from fields beyond the field 7 borders on Friday I think,  but that seemed to go away after a little while.

There is nothing responsible about what you did. You were lucky.

There's a pride in people getting away with stuff - the rules always apply to everybody but ourselves.  There's an argument for saying that in many ways we've been too compliant in the past, but I genuinely think the days of asking people to do something (because it is sensible to do) are long since behind us.

Agreed.  It annoys me because there was a genuine risk to life this weekend (not to mention property, the local countryside and the future of the festival itself.)  For people to blithely announce that they know better, and even to expect a pat on the back for it, drives me mad.  These are the same people who can be found standing amidst the wreckage with a bemused look on their faces saying "well, I never expected that to happen!"

And the warning not to use any naked flames was put up repeatedly on the big screens.  Not that it should have been needed - the risk was obvious.

Hmmmm .. I think I pointed out 2 things that we did responsibly to ensure nothing untoward happened when cooking on gas stoves and I'm not saying I know better nor looking for a pat on the back for it, just offering another perspective to the OP. I think the fact that we did take precautionary measures points to a position whereby we expected something might have happened if we had not taken those measures.
As for getting away with stuff.... we all know about selective stone casting.

'I've never seen Fairport overrun at Cropredy before, and was beginning to worry that they wouldn't do MOTL.  Happily, despite having already overrun the supposed hard curfew, they clearly thought 'sod it' and played it anyway.'

Yes, I understand, but my point is that the responsible thing to do was to not use any naked flames, as we were asked.  Everything you did after you lit your stove was merely mitigating your irresponsibility.  It's like loading a gun and leaving it lying around the house, but saying that you've been responsible because you put it somewhere you thought the kids wouldn't find it.

As for your bit of whataboutery at the end there, are you really equating playing music for ten minutes longer than agreed with the risk of a major fire?

Onm field 4 it was evident this was going on.

But...  i doi wonder how many people knew of the "request"   ?

It was reported here, and in the cropredy FB groups [1]...  and on the main website.  But TBH, aside form booking tickets i never look at the website - i just wait for announ cements to arrive by email.

This isnt a whinge at anybody at all, but there does seem to have been a bit of a disconnect between the message and its promulagtion potentially. Im nhot surprised if many many people had no idea the ban was in place.  (Did AJ make any announcements ?  possibly!)

didds

[1] And here it wasnt reported for some while after the FB groups.

It was reported on Twitter, Facebook, the Website, via email and on the screens. Telepathy not being available, those had to do.

A rant I heard may shed some light. They said "we hid ourselves away for COVID, couldn't go to funerals or visit the dying in hospital. Meanwhile Johnson and his mob partied 7 nights a week. Fock it, we'll do what we want, with a bucket of water somewhere near".

"We won't get fooled again".

Not a viewpoint I condone or buy into, but the lack of trust is those "telling us what to do" may last years.

I/we received no email with this info in at all.  ive just checked again..

All the other internet info requires people using twitter and FB and following certain groups (ditto here).

Which was my entire point.

The screens etc - fair enough. That may not kick in for 24 hours for some of course...  if they even read the screens of course.

QED just because somebody is using a naked flame outside of a van etc doesnt always mean they are sociapathic scum. Its just means an unfortunate  disconnect in comms .

“Not doing as you’re told” isn’t a new phenomena.

People have always done as they want - massive flags on the field, parking in disabled spaces & on zig zags, using short cuts and not closing the gate on farmland, more than 10 items in your supermarket. Speeding. Don’t arrive at Cropredy before 7am etc etc

Some of us happily comply. Some don’t. Sadly, it’s human nature

A neighbour asked the campsite control about using gas stoves for a brew and was told that was ok.
My stove stayed in the boot of my car and I fortunately had a very kind lady in a  campervan next to me, but I couldn't have survived the heat without frequent cuppas.
